View Full Version : Racking up the post count...

No offense to anyone, but it's kinda funny seeing the one-after-the-other-after-the-other quickie comments in the Gallery sections by newer members, I'm assuming to get their post counts up high enough to participate in the Classifieds.

Welcome guys. Hope you enjoy the Forum as much as I have.

And I think this is my 2000th post!

Might be a little too judgmental. I always assumed that those posts (like "seat tube one cm shorter and this would be mine") in the Classified section were just ways to bump a nice frameset or bike back to the top for a good seller without the usual "bump" in the message line.

Only thing about the "nice" and "sweet build" comments from the newbs is that sometimes it bumps up a bike that I may have missed back when it was first posted. Case in point would be KJMUNC's Dogma. Missed it before and was glad to see it brought to my attention for viewing. I am a serious lover of bike porn. It's one of the main reasons I keep returning to work seasonally in a shop -- it's like being a bouncer in a strip joint.

I'll be making my first proper classifieds post in a bit once I get my ducks in a row. My very first post was COMPLETELY embarrassing. I unknowingly posted in the classifieds asking (very vaguely I might add) for help on identify a set a campy ventos. I was trying to find out what year, compatibility and so on, but didn't exactly spell it out clearly... I got picked apart. Lol but almost 400 posts later, I'm addicted. It's all your guys fault for being kind, funny, and helpful.

Looking for non-roadie road frame. Bought a CAAD10 looking to move parts to something steel with character and the ability to run a bit wider tires. I've seen some interesting bikes/frames in the classifieds and have been unable to reply to the ads due to my new membership here.

On the flips side of the argument, there are those of us on the forum who simply don't like to post, but would like to utilize the classifieds section (I'm assuming I'm not the only one). Perhaps, as on other forums I'm a member of, a donation could be made to facilitate the use of the classifieds without meeting the minimum post requirements?

I don't visit the forum everyday to just simply buy/sell items (though I do plenty of that). I've gleaned tons of useful information simply from utilizing the search function and a bit of patience. With that being said, if I have information to share that may help someone out, I don't hesitate to contribute. Unfortunately I'm not near as knowledgeable, nor do I have the experience as many on the forum, so my contributions simply aren't as "impressive".

In the end however, this is simply the best forum I've been a part of - cycling related or otherwise. While I may not make a huge contribution post count wise, I definitely spend a lot of time here, whether searching for some useful information, admiring the bikes in the gallery section (specifically lusting after the Kirks and Speedvagens I hope to someday acquire), or just reading random posts in the General section.... I enjoy it all!

+1 to the above as that's how I feel. I am having to get my post count up too and I'm not a big poster. I understand the reasoning, though. I've been a member on Slowtwitch since 07 (yes, I'm a recovering triathlete turned roadie) and I probably have 100-200 posts, if that.

I'm in the same boat. I am on this forum, everyday several times a day. I visit the site to gain information and knowledge. I don't post a lot because due to several reasons; many time my thoughts have already been stated by someone else or I don't want to offend others if my views differ. I posted once about not being able to use the classifieds and received a less than stellar response which to my came off as snarky. I like this forum and will continue to visit it and I have missed out on several things I would like to purchase due to low post count.
I wish the policy was no selling in the classifieds unless you have the appropriate post count number. To me that would make more sense and keep people from just trying to profit from selling their merchandise, and never contributing to the forum.
Hope this puts me one post closer to "classified user status".

The post count restriction was put in place because we didn't want the forum to be classifieds centric, we want it to be more of a sideline for our discussion community. We want you to join in the discussions and share your experiences... and after a little time: "oh yea, if you have some stuff for sale, you can do it over there".:)

The added bonus to participation is to build a bit of a rapport/rep before joining in the classifieds. For some it makes it a little easier to sell goods to newer members with little to no track record.

I quite like the post count requirement. I stumbled onto PL through a link somewhere else that took me to the classifieds. I was interested in the item, but couldn't participate due to the post count requirement. I noticed a lot of other cool stuff in the classifieds, and then in the General Discussion section, and figured I would hang around and see what this place was about. I probably did a little "Nice bike!" posting at first, but I still do that today when someone has a nice bike (online and in person) so I guess I can't help it.

My guess is that some of the new members who make short posts are actually sincere (I believe I was), but are still getting the lay of the land and aren't ready to post a complete writeup of their weekend ride or ask for advice on vacation plans, car buying, or underwear mishaps (http://forums.thepaceline.net/showthread.php?t=161726) to strangers who may or may not be decent human beings. As I hung around, I realized that PL was full of decent human beings and I have enjoyed coming here for discussions and swapping gear. Long story short: veterans shouldn't judge the short posters too quickly, and newbies shouldn't complain about the measly post count requirement.

I have used the classifieds section from time to time and actually sold one thing. I read recently that something sold on the classifieds section turned out to be stolen, which is pretty crummy.

I am a capitalist, so I like to see an efficient market in action, but I'm not so sure that Paceline needs to be that market. There are plenty of other online market places that you can sell your wares. I'd be ok with a post count of 100. Heck, if I were actually buying a bike on the classifieds, I think I'd want to recognize the name of the seller from his/her posts in the general forum.

I got the feeling that a lot of the deals on the classifieds used to be 'buddy pricing', pretty good deals for friends. I'm not if that is still the case, but it seems that having lots of folks trolling the classifieds makes it harder to have that kind of community vibe.

That's what I did to buy something here, but the "missing out on deals" part works both ways. You guys missed out on some of the things that I could have sold here, that ended up on eBay instead. But I respect the rules and in the end, I got good prices on my stuff anyway.

I found this forum through doing some research on some technical questions and I was impressed by this forum's depth of experience and its friendly atmosphere. I will post a better intro in the appropriate place when I have more time.

Warren,

People like doing business with established members on here, because they are...."established".

More than a few folks have joined and dumped stuff on here that looked like they could have been "a deal". No one is kicking themselves because of all the "deals" we are missing out on from people that are new or been here for a year or less but have no desire to contribute to the forum.

Ken Robb

I got the feeling that a lot of the deals on the classifieds used to be 'buddy pricing', pretty good deals for friends. I'm not if that is still the case, but it seems that having lots of folks trolling the classifieds makes it harder to have that kind of community vibe.

This thread is so old this comment may get lost but I think it's worth posting. There has been "bro-pricing" in our classifieds. Then there were instances where a buyer who enjoyed that turned around and immediately sold the goods for a profit. Not surprisingly some of the sellers who thought they were helping a forumite get something for his own use were miffed to see a quick flip. Other sellers were more sanguine and figured once the goods were sold what the buyer did was none of there business. I understand both points of view but flippers do detract a little from the warm, fuzzy feelings we like to encourage here.

I try to avoid these situations by responding to WTB posts in the thread or even in a private message. The trouble with PMs is many of us don't notice that we have one waiting for us so it may seem like the WTB poster doesn't want to answer.

Sometimes I'll get a return post from a person other than the OP asking to buy my item IF the OP doesn't want it. Those folks are considerate of our feeling of community and I'm usually happy for them to be in a backup position. OTOH someone who seems to want to buy my item "out-from-under" the OP isn't a guy I want to deal with in this case.

There have been threads debating whether it's right for a seller here to sell to anyone other than the first responder to a FS ad. I think it is. This isn't an auction site. There are people I have "known" here for years and consider friends. I would certainly try to let them have my stuff. I would be comfortable that the deal would go smoothly and I would feel I was helping a pal. Sometimes the needed item is of relatively little monetary value so while I might feel moved to sell it to a pal whom I feel has been a valuable contributing forumite I might not want to go to the trouble of wrapping/packaging the stuff and make a trip to the post office to sell it to a stranger for a few bucks.
