View Full Version : Conti GP4000s II's--puncture prone?

I have been running Conti GP4000s tires on my bikes for the past several years and have had little issues with flats. I recently mounted a pair of GP4000s IIs and had a flat on my second or third ride. It was a tiny pinhole in the tube. Several rides later I had a 3-4mm casing cut thru the tread which I fixed with an interior patch. Several rides later I had two flats on the same tire in different places. No retained bits of anything from any flat.
I thought I was alone in this, until GuyGadois texted me a picture of a big casing cut on his GP4000s II.
Now neither of us are exactly pixies at 190+ pounds, but come on!
Anyone else having this problem with the new Conti's?

A friend I ride with has had casing cuts on his that resulted in having to put the tire on trainer duty. I have never had an issue with the 4000s and have yet to try the 4000s II.

I found that GP4000s II's wear a little faster than the original version.

Was getting about 5000km on the originals, now 3000-4000km.

No differences in getting flats. Gravel, road, dodgy suburbs, etc.

Two badly cut sidewalls on my riding buddy's tires already (good thing he bought 4). I'm still all about the krylions.

My experience with these coming off of Michelins has been great. But I'm like a mistreated dog who is happy just not to get the whip. More than a month on a $50 tire? What's not to love?

I've had a couple flats this year on 4000's but, overall they have been excellent tires. Given that I ride about 10K miles per year, I can't complain. After all, its a race tire. Conti makes the 4-Seasons, Gatorskins and Hardshells for the people that flat more often (respectively).

I just switched to 4000s this year for my good wheels and haven't had any issues in 800 or so miles on them. No cuts, no flats, but I've been pretty careful with them too. So far I like them and they seem to feel pretty good and if they're slow or fast I am not noticing which is a good thing (I think)

I have been riding the 4000 II for about 700 miles. So far so good. They ride nice, seem rugged enough. Although I still think I like the ride of Michelin Pro 4 25's better.

To me, the ride quality of the GP II's 25mm feels less supple than the earlier model. While I've had good luck with flats on both models, the new model has more of a Gatorskins quality, even when I run them with less pressure (90/85 rather than 95/90). Have considered starting a thread, as I've wondered if it was just my perception?

recently installed my first set of 4000S IIs...

no problem with cuts, but they seem to be wearing much faster than the previous version.

rear is already squaring off at only 1600 mi. in contrast, I got almost 6K mi from the last tire which was a series I.

GP 4000S II is probably top 3 in lowest rolling resistance. Only slightly better is... Conti TT

It's a very fast tire.

I honestly can't detect any difference in wear or ride from the previous (black) Mk. 1 version. Except I like the more low-key graphics on the original.

Been using both versions for many years now with great success...best move I ever made ( cycling wise) was to switch from Michelins to Conti's...:)

Bought GP4000s II tires last September for the first time. About 2000 miles later and no flats, despite some bad roads and lots of debris. Rear tire shows a bit of wear, but I've easily got a couple thousand miles of life left. I couldn't be happier with them so far.

I was going to say I'd hardly had any flats with them, but that was this morning, and this afternoon a split in the sidewall nearly ended my ride. Probably just a fluke ... they're pretty good tires I think. Possible that Manitoba "roads" are asking too much of any race tire which the GP 4000S II still is.

I've already posted in this thread about how much I like them but had the exact same thing happen on my ride yesterday. Split sidewall, no idea what I hit but in my case didn't have a proper boot and it ended my ride.
I'm not giving up on them but will carry a boot going forward.

Only issue I have with the GP 4000S II is the price. :) Otherwise, great tire.
