View Full Version : Techinical question: Fulcrum wheels, self-locking nipple nut

A friend broke a spoke on a Fulcrum Racing 7 clincher wheel. The nipple is stripped so I need to replace the nipple as well as the spoke. When attempting to remove the nipple, I noticed that there is a hex nut inside the nipple hole. Looking at the website, it appears this must be what Fulcrum calls a self-locking nut over a nipple base plate. The problem is that I need a special tool to fit over the hex nut. It is similar to the Reynolds design, but the Reynolds hex tool doesn't fit. Anyone have a clue how to remove that nut so I can install a standard nipple, or is that even possible?

Figured it out. I removed the spoke from the damaged nipple, then rethreaded it from the tire side. Working it right and left, I finally got the nipple removed. It did take a standard DT nipple and spoke as a replacement.
