I've been using Pearl Izumi vests for years. This winter, I got a Castelli Alpha jacket. When I ride in it, it's like a very snug jersey. It doesn't flap, make noise, or pop up at the shoulders. Now, unfortunately, when I use the vest, which does all these things, it makes me nuts.
Do the more expensive makes not do this? Is it worth it to kick out the money for one? Or is this just a downside to vests, in general?
I need a quiet vest.

It obviously depends on personal fit, but having said the assos falkenzahn vest, actually I think there is one on the marketplace right now, is phenomenal. Very form fitting and no flapping in my experience.
good luck!

I have a Specialized Deflect vest and it doesn't flap at all or for the most part at all. When I got it, I was afraid it was too small but, now I think its better for them to fit very snug. This effectively means two vests are needed, one for cool weather and one for cold weather when more clothing is on. Castelli is a good brand because they put a lot of effort into the garments. Its a good brand to stick with even though some articles are expensive.

Gore. Good stuff. Fairly priced. No flapping (at least on my skinny frame).

I'd go with a Castelli or Rapha. Both make great kit. My PI vest became a dust gatherer.

I prefer the more race cut vests. It seems to me that Pearl Izumi is much roomier cut unless it's part of their P.R.O. line of clothing. Their normal cut results in more flapping.

I've been using Pearl Izumi vests for years.

I've had a blue one since the late 90's. It does flap a little but I don't have the heart to retire it. I can wad that thing up in my fist.

Ha! I may have the same one! The newer one I have is great for packability, but flaps like crazy.

I don't believe this one is the P.R.O. version.

I'll second Assos. I've tried PI and Garneau, even dropping down to a medium size in an attempt to eliminate flapping.
Bought an Assos last spring while on vacation in Switzerland. Not sure of the model; it says Airblock on the collar and Prosline on the back. It may have been an older model, as the shop offered it at a discount. Best fitting vest I've ever had and I don't sound like a big bird flapping in the wind.

I got one with a Voler team order. I'm not sure of the model, but its race cut and has three pockets in the back. Dual direction zipper is great for accessing rear pockets and it definitely doesn't flap about.

Another Assos fan here. I have an older airblock and my only complaint is that it doesn't fold up smaller. It's more of an all day vest though for cooler weather (lets say if it's going to stay in the low 50s/high 40s the whole ride, personally). The falkenzahn is suppose to be nice and comfortable in the high 50s according to reviews. The fit is nice and tight too, I'm a stickler for that.

I will say, I'm probably going to add something like a Sportful ultralight or an Assos Blitzfeder for going up the mountain or for chilly morning where I plan on shedding the vest after 20 minutes. This is mostly a symptom of the large diurnal temperature difference here though and my loathing of being cold.

They stopped making the one I have. This one actually looks pretty nice.

The Men's P.R.O. Aero Vest is a highly technical wind vest with full stretch to eliminate noisy wind flapping. It's as packable as our Barrier Lite Vest with unsurpassed water resistance and snug, aerodynamic fit.

I really like the idea of the Louis Garneau Course Speedzone Vest and several riding buddies have one a like it a lot. The idea of the open area in the back to access your pockets is a great one.

I double checked mine (the newer one), and it is a P.R.O. It is snug, but still makes a crapload of noise.

That's a good idea. Love to know how that feels, with the strap across the bottom.
