I need to go N+1 on the wheel collection. I built a set of decent wheels for my commuter/thrash bike (5700 hubs, Sapim lasers, XC-279 rims) but they came out so nice I want to use them as training wheels on my SSCX. Besides the 105s, what's a good, cheep bomb-proof set of hubs for thrash duty? I'd like them to be cheeeeeep, readily available used and of known dimensions (so I can just plug them into the wheel building calculator).
I have an old set of Deore XTs; can I get a replacement axle and trim the width to 130? Will the dimensions be thrown off so much that I can't use the wheel building calculator?

if you're OK with 32 hole, you're not going to beat the price/performance value equation of 105 hubs, period.

go ahead and try, i dare you.

I figured that might be the case. 32h is Okee Dokee in my book. I'll go down to 28h on race wheels, maybe even 24 on the front, but at 6'5" and 190ish, every day wheels = 32h.
'Twould be nice if there were a Campy version of the 105s, AKA: a bombproof set of hubs that could be had for $50 f you're patient and look hard. Going ShimaNo on that set of wheels made my skin crawl, especially since they won't fit any of my Campy drive trains...but for SSCX wheels, they're great.

For cheap Campy compatibility, Miche aren't bad at all. But yeah, hard to beat 105s, and nice to have a steel FH body for your size, at least with Shimano splines...

105. 8/9/10 speed freehub. 130 rear.32 hole smooth. $45 shipped with skewers

...and there are more SS cog choices for ShimaNo hubs. Gusset is the only SS cog I could find for Campy and they weigh a ton.

5800 or 6800, near identical with QRs and minor finish differences. Great hubs.
