For years on my other bikes I have used the Deda Newton Deep Drop handlebars. I have another build and decided to put on a compact bar to get me more upright in the drops. So I put on the FSA Omega alloy bar and its great in the drops. Problem is the corners on top where I like to put my palms. It is such a tight truncated corner that my wrists pivot inwards towards each other. In effect it makes me feel like I have a 38cm rather than a 44cm bar! The Deda Newton allows my wrist to stay straight I just wish it had a shallower drop. I've been looking at some other alloy bars and some that look interesting are the 3T Ergosum, Zipp Service Course SL 80, and Deda RHM series. If anyone knows these bars and can comment if they can alleviate my wrists from being shoved inwards please chime in.

Love my Ergosums. I have small hands so they are perfect for me. They also work well with Di2 sprint shifters. 40cm. They don't have a lot of reach so plan on a longer stem. I use a 17* 130mm.

Deda shallow drop Newtons?

You know I thought about these too but when I look at the angle of the top relative to the bottom when the bottom is parallel to the ground they seem to have more downward angle. I like my tops to have a flat transition without the bottoms being too raked downward.

How are the corners on top? Do your wrists turn inwards because they are so tight?

Both the 3T Ergosum and the Zipp SL80 have a slightly longer and flatter transition to the hoods than many other compact bars, preserving a nice flat section before the hood.

Maybe that's the ticket. A little longer reach allows the wrist to stay more straight so it doesn't curve in so abruptly? I have larger hands (size 11) so that would seem to make sense.

I have had good luck with PRO bars. I really like how they have a nice flat transition into the campy hoods.

I don't ride on the bends so I couldn't tell you. I do ride on the flat section in front of the hoods and it is very comfortable. With my fit I make the best power in the drops, followed by the flats or tops, followed by the hoods.

Ergosums are cheap and plentiful. Give them a shot.

I've been very happy with Ergosums. I don't really understand the problem described in the first post, though. And...I've always thought the Ergosums have a lot of reach, at least when compared to other compact bars.

If I understand the OPs problem correctly, the Deda RHM won't be what you are looking for.

Try the Zipp SL80 - a really nice shape, dead flat hood transition too. Try the Ergosum if you need a little more reach. Both have nice flats and transitions around the top corners.

The FSA Omega is measured ctc at the end of the drops but the drops are flaired outward making it narrower at the hoods. So size 44 is only ~42 at the hoods. That might be part of your fit issue.

Good Luck!

Well you are absolutely right. I was shocked! Its only 44cm at the flared ends. At the shifters its 42cm. Looks like if I am going to keep using Omega's I will have to get the 46cm bar or go with the Ergosum. I wonder if the Ergosum's have flared ends. Have to check on this so I don't get surprised again.

Dang it. The Omega's are not available in 46cm and neither is the Ergosum. The Ergosum's have a very slight flare but nothing like the Omega's. Other forums complain quite a bit about there not being a shallow drop compact bar without a flare. My challenges begin :(

To the OP, IMO you do not need 46 cm bars (unless you're an NFL lineman). The 44 cm bars (indeed, even 42 cm bars), with or without a flare, should be fine. For years I used a 44 cm FSA Wing Pro Compact (for the record, I am 6'0", 185 lbs, wear a 44 regular jacket/suit). This year I went to a 42 cm bar (Ritchey, FSA, and Zipp), all with a bit of a flare at the bottom (about 40 cm at the hoods). I am very happy I went narrower.

BTW, I try to pivot my wrists inward while riding the bars (hand size 10). It's not a natural motion for me, and I have to concentrate on trying to achieve that. Normally, none of the bars I mentioned above force my wrists inward.

I have always been a fan of classic style bars but there has always been to problems.
1.The tops are too ramped so hoods aren't as comfy and too low.
2. The hooks are too tight when in drops

I have had cinelli giro di Italia. Deda newton shallow and had the deda Belgian deep on my C59 the deeps gave my hands more room and had a flatter top but the drop is a lot and the reach is too long too.

I ended up getting recently ritchey Neo Classic
They have short reach and flatter top for a classic style bar and have a shallow drop but have room for your hands when in the hooks.

Here is some bar examples btw I have owned all these bikes in the last year and a half and I'm a one guy bike guy. All them have been ridden then sold for one reason or the other I'm really picky on fit. That's why most of them have similar components as I usually just buy frame, but have gone through different groupsets as well, my friends think I have a problem. I find it tough to get right fit plus I like trying different cool bikes.
Peoretti duende with deda newton shallow.
Too ramped on tops too cramped in hooks

Peoretti love #3 and Colnago C59 and pinarello
Deda Belgian deep nice bars but long reach and a lot of drop. Hands have more room in hooks though.

Thanks so much for your quality input. Seeing as all compacts have a certain degree of flare I will try to make the best of it and I may try and find one with less flare. I like the look of the Neo Classic's and will try to find a used set to try out. For the record I own the Deep Drop Newton's and totally agree with you. They look great but those drops are DEEP and if I'm not careful can hit my knees due to have a long femur.
