View Full Version : Recommend a ride wallet/ pouch

Can anyone recommend a light weight low profile ride wallet/ pouch that I can stick a tube, CO2, lever and inflater head in that can be tucked neatly into a jersey pocket? I hate saddle bags because they always seem to fall off or just look janky. I currently stash everything into a water bottle but I'm going to need the water bottle space for gatorade in another few weeks.

TIA!

I just thought of something: In a pinch you can take a section of your duct tape wallet / pouch apart and use it as a tire boot. I bet you can't do that with a fancy-schmancy hipster Rapha "portefeuille." ;)

Is that the essentials case?

Something like the Waterfield Cycling Ride pouch (https://www.sfbags.com/collections/pouches/products/cycling-ride-pouch) would work but I'm looking for something even smaller if possible.

Buy a package of Hormel Turkey. The turkey comes in a zip lock type pouch that is super durable unlike a zip lock bag. Pefect size for a tube, multitool, and tyre lever. Phone too if not too big. Fits in a Jersey pocket or cut off water bottle. Plus you get to eat some turkey.

I just actually purchased a Waterfield pouch last month. The size is just right for what I carry (one tube/patch kit or two tubes, two cartridges, CO2 head, a bit of cash, a credit card, and a small multi tool), and the build quality is excellent. It's pricey for sure, but i feel you get what you pay for.

I usually do put my phone in too, but I'll take it out of it's case first (heavy duty Seidio case, Motorola Rzr Maxx). With the phone in, it is a bit bulky, but not so much that i don't want to carry it (and I'm on the smaller side).

So do you guys who do the pouch-in-the-pocket thing never lose them on descents? I've had so much crap fly out of my pockets on descends I'm terrified I'd just lose everything, if I went to one of those folding pouch things.

It's always side pockets, though.. I don't think I've ever lost anything from a center pocket.

Currently, all I carry is two allens in a plastic sack, my phone, and whatevs snack I may or may not have. But I'm probably gonna want to pack a little more again, once the summer days start encouraging epic'er rides

On most of my rides the only thing I carry in my jersey pockets are Clif bars and my Lezyne mini-pump. Everything else (spare tube, tire levers, patch kit, tire boot, mini-tool, etc) goes in the saddle bag.

Only if I expect a significant temperature change will there be something else in there (arm/knee warmers etc)

I suppose they do look cleaner without them. I'll give you that.

I guess in my case the convenience of permanently keeping stuff like spare tube, patch kit, mini-tool, etc in there overcomes the hassle and extra weight of having them in my jersey pockets.

velomonkey
04-11-2015, 01:03 AM
Ok, being as into bikes as I am, and as velomonkey is velosexual one of the last things I critique other riders on is a saddle bag. Sometimes too big of a saddle bag, but like a little fizik that attaches - totally fine.

I did the sock, toe strap thing for years and can get a tube, c02, lever and money in there and it's fairly small. I just today put my rapha pack on that I got at a wicked sale price. Not sure on it, stuff goes in there nice, and it looks ok - sure is weather proof, but the strap is plastic and it's bigger than the tried and true sock method.

The phone goes in a sandwich bag in the center pocket unless I have a rain jacket in there.

Wow... Despite the fact that that is a consistent nagging fear every time I put my house keys in my jersey pocket, I have never, ever lost anything out of a jersey pocket. Not even when crashing catastrophically. Definitely not when JRA, even downhill.

Ziplock? I know it's been mentioned. I carried a wee pump in my pocket rather than on the bike..until I forgot it. Same for in pocket rather than wee bag under saddle, IMHO. Other issue right now here is really cool in the AM(when I start) and 30 degrees warmer when I finish so pockets stuffed full of all the crap I take off. No room for bag of stuff.

Small bag - 25 cubic inches (the same bag OP posted above). Usually not an issue, but if the bag becomes tilted just a bit it rubs inside the thigh. Contact is slight enough that it is typically not felt, but eventually rubs through.

A small, rigid bag with a rigid attachment system, like the Topeak or Blackburn, should solve any issues with the bag shifting or tilting.

Here's my current favorite: the Timbuk2 XT (http://www.amazon.com/Timbuk2-Bike-XT-Seat-Pack/dp/B00LGZENQA).

Narrow profile and snugs up nice and tight under the rails. And super easy to unhook and move between bikes.

That is quite unfortunate. I have a trans-it saddle bag that is a fair amount larger than what the old spud posted. I haven't had an issue with it shifting or rubbing. Granted, I really cinch it down and I generally wear cut off Dickies or athletic shorts (I don't own any lycra or cycling specific clothes at all). The thicker material is probably not as easily affected if there is any rubbing.

Some people like saddle bags and some people don't. No big deal. I personally don't like them because they fall off and I either have to zip tie them on or wait for the dumb thing to start dangling off my post and then shove it in my jersey pocket. When I rode Aliantes I would use the Fizik bags that clipped in and IMO that's the best design out there but I now ride Pro saddles so no more clip. I've also frayed a pair of shorts due to velcro from a saddle bag. Rules or not, I don't like saddle bags.

I think the key to this whole discussion is if you plan on purchasing a pouch, what are you going to be using it for? If its for a phone and/or wallet, you only need something smaller like the Timbuk2 that's been mentioned. There are many other options.

If the idea is to replace a saddle bag--different story. You need something bigger. I have bought the Lenzyne bag. Its OK, like a heavy-duty Glad bag. Just recently purchased the Waterfield pouch. Very well made--like a new harness leather belt--and right size to hold everything. My concern with this leather pouch is how its going to feel against my back when its 90 degrees and 90% humidity. Nothing like a thick piece of leather sitting right on your sweaty back. From my perspective the Waterfield pouch in nylon would be best, but the manufacturer has indicated they are not going to produce this way.

I have purchased others--can't remember all the names--but so far seem to go back to the saddle bag. Should have a better idea on the Waterfield by end of summer.

Supposed to be (mostly) waterproof, so it'll keep my iPhone safe, and hold a key, money, etc. Not CO2/tools, but it's a good solution to the other stuff I think...

I'm a saddle bag guy but have used a few different things over the years for jersey pockets... Mail order or custom coffee zip locks are very heavy and vented and work well. I also second the soulrun stuff if you just need a wallet - well made and very practical. Some neoprene phone cases are pretty functional, and if you don't care much about looks a beef jerky bag will last pretty well and is a good size for extra stuff. Oh yeah, some heavy mailing pouches work well and are padded but not so great if you sweat much. And last but not least don't forget an extra water bottle full of stuff if you aren't using two.

I'm a saddle bag guy but get that the big ones look goofy. I've always just used a minimal one that can hold a tube, mini-tool + levers + patch kit. It is too easy to end up not having your tools if you always have to remember to stick the extra stuff in your jersey. I like making cycling simpler, not more full of accessories and rituals.

And I go for the zip-loc freezer bag to hold my phone + wallet. I agree something is needed, I actually never had a phone break from sweat/rain but my wallets would disintegrate after a year or two from sweat & rain without the plastic bag.

Not sure why everything has to be bespoke around here. The ziploc bags work great and you just grab another one when they start to wear out. And EVERYTHING wears out when you cycle around with it for thousands of miles. They go with the "keep it simple" theme too.

I am working up to it but I am going to go full fred at some point this summer and go for a ride with a handlebar bag when I have a chance for a really long ride and want to bring lunch.

Just found this at my LBS tonight. First one I've found that fits my iPhone 6 with its case on. Nice details - padded back, dual zips, ... I'll try it out tomorrow.

Big thumbs up on the Serfas Jersey Bag. Fits everything, protects everything, and doesn't feel like I'm wearing a shoebox on my back. Recommended.
