View Full Version : What's a good Base Layer ??? (esp. in warm weather)

On the nips thread (that will surely go down in history as one of the "high points" of the forum) a good base layer was mentioned as a possible solution.

What are the good options one might try to fight off the dreaded NA/NB? I define "good" as better than average performance at a reasonable price. Not Assos, but maybe PI...

Also, at this time of year a key concern would be temperature. We've soon going to be 90deg + much of the time here in St Louis (it was 92 a few days ago !!!) so something that minimizes body temp increase would be important.

Thanks
Louis

save your nipples for when it matters:

Here in central Texas we know a thing or two about heat ;) I like the lightweight (sleeveless) craft base layers. Reasonably inexpensive (though there are cheaper ones) and they work pretty well.

craft lite.
when temp is 80+
regular below 80
never start a ride at 78 if it might go over 80...then you are screwed and have to change mid ride.
its the law

The DeFeet Un-D-Shirt works for me, and I'm pretty sure that's the one that's seen all over the peloton with the logo cut out. Soft & comfy, sleeveless . . . and cheap too!

I have the DeFeet and Hincapie 'undershirts' that work very well in warm weather to keep you cool and dry.

I've got a couple of the DeFeet base layers and a Voler one. All sleeveless. They are so similar that I can't tell them apart, except for the logos. I really like them for a broad range of temps because they are really thin and wick sweat so darn well. But when it gets really hot (90+) I'll sometimes go without the base layer. One of these days I'll have to try the Craft one, but I think the DeFeet and Voler ones are cheaper, especially since you can sometimes find them on sale.

Have Craft and Defeet but my favorite is my Descente. A little longer tails and better moisture transfer. I find I get clammy in my Defeet.
