I have been thinking of going from 40cm bars to 38cm bars, and figured I might try some "classic bend" while I'm at it.

I know the Zipp SL70's come in 38cm, but they are a little pricey and since it's just an experiment I don't want to spend too much.

Anyone know any other brands out there?

He probably meant to link the Deda Newtons. Come in both deep and shallow versions.

I ride 38/39s right now. I think the wider bar thing got overblown ten or twelve years ago when Armstrong was trying to come up with more bullcrap excuses / cover stories as to why he was dusting everybody.

Spinning more on climbs, wider bars, tougher training, etc.

Rode some 42s last week on friends bike. Felt like I was on a tractor.

Agree 100% - some bull about opening up the lungs while climbing.

yeah, but they're not a classic bend, they're a modern compact bend. their WCS Classic bar is a classic bend, but it doesn't come narrower than a 40cm.

I've looked and looked too but haven't been able to find a true classic bend in a 38.

these exist (http://www.amazon.com/Avenir-Classico-Road-Handlebars-Black/dp/B003FQSEPE/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1423348903&sr=8-7&keywords=avenir+bars) but i'm told that they're not quite classic bend - they're more of a shifter-optimized classic bend, a la Pro Vibe 7S Round.

Probably as close as you'll get.

I know exactly what you mean. Like driving a truck.

I always find myself pulling my elbows in while in the drops with 40cm bars anyway, so I figured 38 would be interesting to try.

Has anyone used the Zipp SC 80 bars? The bend looks ok (but not a classic bend) and it's available in 38cm pretty cheap.

i've got some ungrooved cinelli deep drop (model 66) in 38cm with a 26.4 clamp cinelli 1a stem in 12cm if you want to go real classic. the bars were NOS when i got them and they were put on my track bike after i started riding a badass all arounder for the last 5 or 6 yrs...aka they have almost no miles on them at all.

I'm a classic drop guy too, 40s on the road bike. On my track bike I'm using 38cm FSA omegas, not classic drop, but key IMO, is the drop/hook section is much longer then many other compacts. 3T compacts, and some others don't leave enough room in the drop flat section to wrap your paws around.
