Not lycra, but riding shorts that work on and off the bike. Thinking along the lines of the Chrome Union. Who else has gear worth looking in to?

i know rapha and cadence do shorts, never owned either but both have a pretty good rep for apparel, maybe giro "new road" stuff?

Swrve. All the details are designed for riding, MUSA and durable. Cool folks too.

Swrve, forgot about them! Thanks!

Giro stuff fit me a bit strange, but I do have some Rapha Touring Shorts that are solid

I love my MTB shorts from Kitsbow. Painfully expensive, but I was able to scoop a pair from Backcountry for 25% off (still not cheap) last fall. I'd liken the quality and fit to Arc'teryx.

Looks like they have added a more all-around short (the Haskell) to the lineup.

For max comfort without chamois look for shorts like some of those for mtn. climbing that have a "saddle" bottom with no seam in the crack area. Some Polo boxers were made this way and I love them but my recent buys have seams "right up the middle" like so many cheaper brands. Next time I will open the packages to see what kind of seams I may be buying. :)

Think outside the box, go with a bib-kilt.

Vader does it, works for him.

+1 for Swrve, I'm a big fan. I've also heard Outlier shorts are really nice.

I can't add much except to agree that Swrve stuff is awesome, and they've got their regular knickers on sale right now which are my favorite casual riding shorts.

Rapha touring shorts are great imo. The lasted for 2 years of more or less everyday riding and are very comfy.

I haven't tried these, but a friend highly recommends them: http://www.bicycleclothing.com/Mens-Touring-Shorts.html.

I love the heavily late 80s to mid 90s everything is on the site. That being said... I REALLY want to get those now!

There are so many awesome shorts on the market. Try on before you buy. Some are cut for a big but short legs or skinny but long legs. Find a cut that fits you. No one company uses a magic material or construction. If they fit look at Bellwether.

For casual shorts that I can ride in, I have used N-ZO Dobies for many years. They are not cheap, but they are very well designed, and durable.

everyone has an opinion but my favorite all around shorts are the mission workshop ones. they run huge, at least mine did, so size down. equally perfect are swrve's blk line shorts (synthetic ones, not cotton/denim) but the material is thinner than MW, the are trimmer cut (less creases to sit on) and they are much lighter too.

Love my Patagonia All Wear 8" shorts.

Perfect fit, perfect weight and they don't cost anything like Outlier & similar ilk.

Now we're talking. These $100+ shorts look nice, but I'm too frugal to allow it. The Patagonia look good...still more money than I like to spend, but not as bad.

I have some Gap cargo shorts that work great. I'll have to check the material but they're not cotton. I also have some Prana hiking pants that work really well for riding.

why buy some special "cycling shorts" that will not be as good as a top-shelf set of bibs?

For me, lycra under shorts in summer is way too hot.
I've had good luck with smartwool chamois under whatever
cutoffs I have laying around. I have a 15+ year old pair of
BDU shorts (http://tacticalgear.com/propper-poly-cotton-ripstop-bdu-shorts-zip-fly-khaki?gclid=CjwKEAjw9PioBRDdpqy0-ofG3DgSJAACe5NEW35MaX7hwdjINASse0UhczrgW9hIIMtFPNE bg45TMxoCruTw_wcB#/3261/657,1705/1) that refuse to die.
