...on a bike built for a mechanical group!

AKA an upgrade thread due to "the incident" pictured below:

My now very rare 6770 RD took a ride in my rear wheel from the middle of the cassette. Not sure how or why the chain jammed in the jockey wheels.

I took one look at 6770 used prices, then 6870 new prices and decided to make the jump to 11.

Not having to replace the FD is allowed by my old firmware version signified by a) having this kit off a 2012 bike that was never updated and b) not having multishift. SO I'm using a 6870 RD with 6770 FD and shifters.

When I bought my Wheels I noticed that some of the freehub was machined down for extra cassette clearance. I took off the extra spacers I had on there to run 10s but my 6800 lockring wouldn't even grab. I went to town with a file and now it fits with plenty of clearance on either end. This is a Shimano 10s freehub from HED.

Interestingly enough the brand new RD hanger I bought wasn't straight. Chain was rubbing the hanger until I fixed it.

Now if it would just warm up and the town would sweep the streets! We've been riding fat bikes for a while now!

That's awesome!

As a heads up, don't flash any di2 firmware updates. Shimano nerfed it with the last update.

Check back in six months and let us know how well it's working.

Will do. Do you have any indication it may not hold up? I suppose the freehub might not like being filed, and I would have to get the 11s upgrade kit on that for $200.

you could also just convert to campy and use a campy cassette for a lot less than $200...;)

Not to mention no dishing required!

I've seen two negative things with these homemade conversions. One is poor shifting over time. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. The other is broken freehubs. The thing is, you have a simple fix to do it the right way.

Yep, just did that and had to upgrade to an 11 speed front.

I was pretty frustrated, I was wrenching at shop at the time they rolled out that upgrade. Frustrated a lot of customers..."hey, so you need to spend another $300 on top of what we told you."
