I never really considered this, but yeah--people seem to like nicknames.

I shared a house with 5 other guys as a college Junior:

Palooka,
Nancy,
Mandingo,
Flingus, and
...uh... I forget.

I was The Cap'n.

We bestowed these nicknames on each other, probably under the influence of some substance. They stuck, at least for a few years. We also gave our house a name, Mel. And Palooka wrote a song about the house:

High above the grass below us
Where it smells so swell
Six young men enrolled in college
Wave to all from Mel

We wave to all from Mel
We wave to all who pass our way
Strike the harp and join the chorus
Come eat with us today
Several years later, Flingus moved to Boston. My wife bestowed another nickname on him, Shermie. The years passed, and others - adult and kids alike - have come up with their own nicknames for him. The man has 5 or 6 different nicknames, and responds to them all. I don't know whether to be jealous or appalled. Personally, I call him Mark.

Thanks, good read.

Zero until everyone left home - wise little brother

Foot or Big foot - given to me by a warm hearted big man named Claude who ran the stable where I kept a horse and sometimes made extra $$. He said "it takes two cows just to make one boot for you boy."

Too Tall Folks called me Too Tall since college and it was my first internet handle when I ran an dialup BBS.

I really like nicknames, adds to the spice of life....but not in a skulnbonz sort of way.

Swoooop. not the sexiest of cycling names... but at least she wasn't yelling at me... it's a right of passage here. none of these are internet passwords so don't even try.

My father, with his way with words, likes to call me "dork"

My ceramics teachers called me Johnny for some reason (my name is John)

My college professor called me shinomaster cause I glazed everything in a glaze called shino..go figure..

My best friend called me Johnny-oka..combining my name with famous Japanese potter Shimaoka Tatsuzo.

There is someone on the forum whose actual name is Mi. So I guess she calls herself Mi quite often.

I was tiny-small when I was young, so I was called 'Mouse' until I was about 11, and still have an uncle who calls me that.

There was 'Sludgemonster' as a reference to a job I had once - vacuuming out swimming pools in the spring to get them ready for summer. This involved a wet suit, full-faced mask and air compressor along with hours underwater in among the decayed 'stuff.'

And then there was Timba (Tarzan's faithful elephant friend).

Nicknames? Let's see.
Ginger - College buddies...that one stuck. One friend got terribly upset when he found out my name was really Mary Ann because he only knew me as Ginger.
Murry - my neices and their mother
Peter Pan - My college advisor (don't know if that was good or bad)
M. A. ("M" "A" not "ma")
Bikeachondriac (No, really. I bent my fork. [and I did...])
Crash I don't encourage that one. I think my orthopedic surgeons are going to call me Frequent Flyer soon...

And a host of others. Evidently people don't think "Mary Ann" suits me.

I always liked Mary Ann better.

My adult nickname was actually Hoss.
The manager of the welding shop I worked at forgot my name.
The conversation went like this....

Employee 1. " Hey Boss, I need some help loading this big door onto the truck"
Boss " go get Hoss"
Emp 1 "Who?"
Boss "Hoss, that guy right over there ( pointing at me)"
Emp 1 "His name is Hoss?"
Boss " No, but go get him and tell him I need to ask him a question" ( all of this was shouted in a noisy shop and I overheard every word....)
Me "Yeah Boss, you needed to see me?"
Boss "Whats your name?"
Me "Don Walker, why?"
Boss "isnt that the same name as the big guy on Bonanza?"
Me "I have no clue"
Boss to Employee 2 walking by "Hey, who played "hoss" on Bonanza?"
Emp 2 "Dan Blocker"
Boss to me "Dan Blocker, Don Walker... F*** it, you're "Hoss"".

Stuck ever since...

sorry to bore you all.

My real name is Kathleen but I've always been Kathi.

I was 11 when my brother married a Kathy (Kathleen) so I became Little Kathi or Peanut.

I'm still little so I'm Aunt Peanut to my neice and nephews but I'm also called Katie, Katrina, Aunt Kathi or Little Kathi by my family.

When I was a kid my brothers used to tease me and call me Katydid, that one I hated! :). I had 3 older brothers and when they teased my mom told me I was a "lonely petunia in an onion patch". Fortunately my sister came along.
