OT: NTSC vs PAL

Looking at European DVDs. Some are only available in PAL.
I was under the impression that DVD players for the states are NTSC only. A perusal of Amazon shows "region-free" players as being PAL compatible.
Is this so?
I thought the 50 vs. 60 hertz difference came into play.
Please enlighten me.

As long as the DVD player has a built in pal to ntsc converter it will play correctly.
