Great story on BBC.com . . .

I had one of these, but the low budget model without the stick shift. Cool bike, but I have no idea what ever happened to it. Sigh.

I just went into the garage to take this shot. Got the bike used when I was 12, first bike in the US. 52T chainring, 14-17-20-24-28 freewheel, made a gear chart for myself. Heh.

My best buddy when I was ~11 years old had the Apple Krate. Man I wanted one of those so bad!

If I had a garage and some unlimited wherewithal I think somewhere after my 5th or 6th custom handbuilt roadbike, a couple fat tire offroad things, a low-racer 'bent and maybe a tadpole, I would turn my attention towards finding a mint Schwinn Krate.

...and then on my very first ride I'd try to pop a wheelie, flip over backwards, hit my head, and never be able to ride any bike again. Good times!

Back when I was 10 years old, I rode a Schwinn Collegiate Sport, a drop bar bike. My 8 year old brother rode a 5 speed Schwinn Lemon Peeler, the yellow version of the Orange Crate.

My next older brother had an Apple Krate. My first bike was a single speed Huffy imitation. I rode that thing until I ran into a concrete stop block at Lake Harriet, bent the fork and when my dad tried to pull it back the steering tube broke. It resides deep in the landfill near Bloomington.

I had a blue stingray when I was a kid... sissy bar and baseball card taped to the chainstay...
One of the painters at Serotta had this one with ape bars so I had to take a spin... nothing makes me happier than riding fun bikes!

A promise to myself this summer is to ride this one a few times to the local car show

Lemon Peeler for me. Used to wheelie that thing for blocks.
Became a ramp jumping bike as we built take off/landing ramps and took turns laying between them as we soared over each other like Knievel.

... lots of memories... and we lived! Stupid fun.

Yeah. That springer fork could take a lot of abuse.
