how does he get up a climb without pedaling?

Oh that's super easy. It's called magic.:)

Just kidding. That's a hefty skill set they have. I would guess that he bunny hops in a forward motion and is able to recapture their momentum each time. Either way... it's beyond me...

Watch his arms carefully. He is pushing the bike forward as it settles on the step and then lifting as his "follow through".

He is definitely one of the best.

When he reaches the top step, you see a flash to the rider's right, down by his rear wheel. That's my remote flash.

It didn't seem to give him an increased advantage to me. At least not if the person was pretty quick running up the steps like in the second clip.

that's a wicked skill to have in your bag. tho i suspect this works best when the steps are nearly the same as your wheelbase.

you did the same as a child every time you jumped on a swing set. those of us who raced bmx as kids simply co-opted that skill when we jumped on our bikes.

I recall someone figuring out that he was about 0.5 seconds faster up the stairs than runners.
Jeremy Powers rode the stairs in practice but ran them in the race; he said the risk of riding them wasn't worth the time advantage.

I remember cody saying it was more about saving energy than saving time. He also won a lot of fans with that move.

You can also take heart in the fact that 99.9% of cyclocross racers never would attempt this maneuver in a race :)
