I friend of mine that wants to ride the TdCure in april bought a fairly nice older Cdale touring bike off craigslist.

Before I ever get a chance to look at it he decide to completely break it down and clean it. Puts it back together not knowing jack about what he is doing and surprisingly (NOT) everything does not go as planned.

I'm no expert but generally can do simple adjustments and get things to work.

However the front derailer has me stumped. I don't know that it worked before he took it apart but I can not get it to go to the big chain ring now.

The crank arm hits the outer part of the derailer before the inner part pushes the chain. I assumed it was simply mounted to high but as soon as I lowered it the teeth of the outer ring hit the back of the cage.

Not the greatest pics but here is what I got.

Are the chainrings correct? Did someone put a 48 outer where a 52 used to be? It looks like the derailuer is too high and being a derailuer for a triple it may be hitting the middle ring or the derailuer is in the correct position but the outer ring is too small.
Also, it looks like the crank is moved out to the right? Bottom bracket in correctly?

Never mind. I just figured it out. This is a true clamp on derailer and I'm used to braze ons. I just had to rotate the derailer towards the back of the bike and it is lining up fine.

also looks as if you turn the tail of the derailleur inward slightly, then the crank arm will just clear the derailleur as it is supposed to do.

You got it now.

Canted out(tail out) and way too high. Lower till the inner cage is just above the middle ring and the outer cage should be aligned with the chain when on big ring, smallest cog(highest gear). Make sure cable when in smallest ring is TIGHT.

When in smallest ring and biggest cog(lowest gear), the chain should be about 1mm from inner cage-limit screw..Attach cable tight..shift to middle ring. Have outer limit screw way out..gently shift to big ring and smallest cog(highest gear)..adjust outer limit screw so chain about 1mm from outer cage.
