Does anyone have any empirical observations using non-salsa brand straps with the anything cage? The stock straps aren't the bees knees and I have to tighten them more often than I'd like. The amount of times that I'd be comfortable stopping and tightening is 0 while also keeping it easy to release.

The cage is on the underside of the downtube near the bottom bracket so it's not in the normal upright position it was engineered for.

I alternate between a Surly junk strap, and those long gear ties. The salsa straps are garbage.

Thanks. I was thinking about trying the junk straps. Which do you think will be better at keeping a tight hold? I'm holding a 4 lb canteen upside down and almost sideways so I'm trying to get zero slop. The salsa straps work for a couple hours but then loosen and then I hear the metal canteen clanking. I ended up tying them together and to the rack which helped a little bit.

I use double sided Velcro (the real stuff) from Joann fabrics / craft store. It comes in a 12' roll and they're having a friends and family sale currently. We used it to mount number plates in BMX days vs Ty-Raps b/c it is reusable. I've put a link below for the 3/4" but it comes in many varieties. (even camo!)

I'm using a junkstrap to hold the bumper on my Volvo. Seriously. I've linked 2 together to hold a coffee table to the back of my Big Dummy cargo bike. I use them to strap down my lunchbox, jacket, books, and more to my front rando rack on my commute home. A 4lb canteen isn't a challenge. Loop it around 2 or 3 times. It's just a long toe strap, incredibly handy. Buy a 6 pack of the straps, it's worth the high price for such simple things. They work great for all sorts of things, as my bumper can attest to.

(Volvo backstory: Volvo bumper brackets are prone to rust issues, and this Volvo I just bought had been hit in the rear corner, completely shearing off the rusty bracket. While I await the new bracket, the junkstrap is effectively supporting one half of the bumper and pulling it tight to the car to keep it from flopping about.)

Okay I'll try those out. Must be badass straps if they're holding your car together. Regarding velcro, several reasons why it won't work. fabric stretch, but mainly contamination by dust dirt and water on the trail.

Voile ski straps are good for anything and everything strap related. I bet they'd work well.
