It's so cold that the waves in Nantucket are partially frozen. Check out the images on this website...

Makes 'em easier to catch. How to cook 'em is your problem...

I've been putting Hot Pockets strategically in my wetsuit to keep me toasty riding the slurpee waves!

salt raises the concentration, lowering the freezing point..really cool.

Pretty wild weather. My sister commutes to work on the Hingham Ferry.

Sat early morning was below zero here on Martha's Vineyard so my wife hopped out of bed and said let's snowshoe to Cedar Tree Neck. As we got to the place where we could see the beach and shore the first 20-30 feet of water was an odd light grey. When we got to the beach we could see that amongst the chunks of ice in the waves were millions of tiny pieces of ice. Slurpee is the word that came to us too! Truly stunning!

I had an office on Nantucket for a couple of years. That is one COLD place in the winter! Probably the only time in my life I refused to go out to get something to eat for dinner one night. It was better to stay inside and go hungry! :)

Very cool looking.
Makes me want to go get a Mr Misty at Dairy Queen although it's currently -4 degrees here so I'll probably pass today.

I saw these in motion on NBC news last night! I couldn't believe it. I wish some wetsuited surfer had tried to ride them.

I was talking to a guy who runs a local surf shop the other day, he says this is the longest run of freezing weather we've had in years. Most launch points on the bay are frozen over and have been for over a month. Now you're seeing ice starting to show up in the waves outside the bay on the ocean. Crazy!

How would you even get enough speed paddling into one of those? Maybe you could tow in but you would lose all your speed pretty quick with all that resistance against your fins. I bet it would be like doing super sets of squats trying to pump down the line and make sections. I imagine paddling out would probably freeze both your arms off even with a patty R4!

I saw those pics yesterday, and they really sent a chill down my spine.

I keep hoping that this isn't a harbinger of things to come, but...

Happy Weekend, I guess

I don't know why weather is a political issue - but it is

I grew up in CT, I lived in DC for 18 years, I am back in CT

A few years ago, I think 2012, we had a winter here in CT that was warmer than any winter I spent in DC. Every week had a day in the 50s - this was after it snowed wicked bad in October!!!!!!

Snow in DC in March happened once the entire time I was in DC. It snowed, it was there for a day, it melted.

Nothing about this year is normal - this sucks. Senators who bring in snowballs to prove their point, that is't "not warm" when, in fact, it is, should have said snowball thrown in their face.

You know it's cold when equipment specs don't make it down to your temperature range. I'm looking at putting another camera on my bike, but the only DLSM I have that's waterproof is my GH3, and there are no waterproof M4/3 lenses, so now I'm looking at their little "tough, waterproof, freeze=proof" camera, the DMC-FT25. It's got what I need, time lapse shooting, multiple autofocus modes, a 25mm equivalent lens... And it's freeze-proof down to 14F, which would limit me to mid day for most of this month.

It's like buying winter clothing from a company based in California...
