For those who dream of the mountains....

Excuse my snarky title, but I believe many cyclo-tourists do themselves a huge disservice by prioritising Alpe d’Huez above many far, far more interesting roads. So in an effort to convince people to consider cycling somewhere else —– here is my list of 100 better options.

I need to show that page to my wife. More justification to get a s&s coupled tandem. The Stelvio is on my bucket list.

Anyone have list like this for Coloroado or Montana? I'll never make across the pond.

Alpe d’Huez is a nice climb and I have done it a few times, but it is far from the top of the list of amazing climbs, even when compared to the climbs with 50km of it. This would be the same for more than a few of the "famous climbs". Velotel can chime in here since he has done most of the climbs in the alps and can confirm this truth.

For me it's Mauna Kea from the ocean to the very top. I checked off Haleakala during my honeymoon in 2012.

All the images of the hairpins of the Stelvio though have had me dreaming of it for years.

Man, I've got to get going, I'm turning 61 next week and have a lot of climbing to do. They all look gorgeous, that's some beautiful riding.

Maybe part of the appeal of AdH is if you climb it the day of or the day before the Tour comes through.

beautiful photos.

the author needs to head to Taiwan for perhaps the biggest climbs in the world on paved roads. Taiwan KOM took me 4 hours to go up when i raced it in 2013. 0 to 3275m climb. stunning scenery I was able to enjoy once I got dropped from the pack:)

my strava recording of it: https://www.strava.com/activities/94431170

+1. Hoping to do Mauna Kea this fall, then Haleakala a few days later.

FWIW, I spent 2 weeks in the bourg d'oisans region a couple summers ago and alpe d'huez (though obviously historic and beautiful) was pretty far down on my list of favorite climbs...the short switchbacks just get boring...to be honest, I prefer a more meandering ascent over an efficient one ;)

glandon, madeleine, sabot, sarenne, galibier - all better IMO
even the small/unknown roads across the valley up and over to Ornon are gorgeous and partially unpaved! (https://www.strava.com/activities/70018085)

this was the hardest/most beautiful day ive ever had on a bike. (https://www.strava.com/activities/69754747)

that said, if you havent been to the french alps to ride, go, asap, its remarkable and worth every single penny.

going back this summer! :)
