View Full Version : how to disassemble an XT skewer?

So, I had a weird thing happen on an MTB ride this past weekend. My rear skewer broke off at the end, wrapping my ride up too early. It was a trusty, nearly new XT skewer (M770 or something like that?) and it seems that I simply had it tightened too much and it snapped. Strange.

Anyhoo, my LBS who checked over the rear wheel (a cone came loose as well) gave me a junk Shimano rear skewer and said it was possible to replace the rod/axle on it.

I cannot seem to see how to take apart the broken XT skewer to do this. I won't do it on the other one, as it works fine, so if I need to, I can use that skewer and just suffer the humiliation of not having 'Deore XT' stamped on the side.

Does anyone here know how to take these apart? I am van - I want to restore the XT cam lever!

Thanks for your advice/youtube link (that I couldn't find)/other thoughts.

I'm assuming you tried to unscrew the slotted silver thing and it didn't move...I wonder if it is threaded and held in with loctite, or is it riveted/peened together?

This guy says loctite- http://forums.mtbr.com/downhill-freeride/how-do-i-take-apart-shimano-qr-skewer-574976.html

Yeah. The LBS employee said to lift the little plastic cover on the top and a circlip is underneath that will release it. I lifted it, but no such circlip that I can see.

How do I release Loctite? Should I? Should I toss this thing and buy a new one?

Oh...I wasn't sure if that slotted thing was what held the lever on, guess it's just decorative.

The circlip thing makes sense, and there probably is no loctite involved.

IF it's Loctite, you need to know which kind.

Blue just needs some extra effort.

Red needs heat.

Ok, so...

Which plastic thing did you remove? The one visible in this pic- http://www.moruyabicycles.com.au/contents/media/l_Shimano%20Deore%20XT%20Front%20Skewer%20Silver.j pg

Or the round thing on the opposite side with a slot for a screwdriver?

My first thought was that the slotted thing is threaded and held in with loctite, and the plastic thing on the other side should be left alone?

...if I was at home I'd try taking one of my own apart.

Yes, that little plastic cover on top of the lever. That is where the circlip is supposed to be. I may hack away at it to see. It is dead anyways if the rod is too short.

Thanks,

D

I think your LBS guy was confused...if there is a circlip, it would be on the other end.
