View Full Version : Maybe a stupid question RE: the hour record

I saw a picture recently of an omnium racer. Why didn't the new hour record rules shift to this type of bike? rather than the whole sale change to aero positioning?

The omnium is 6 events atmo. I'm sure they get aero in the 4K and 1K heats.

I can't see your picture, but I assume from the URL that it's a picture of Gaviria on his mass-start bike. As e-richie points out, the omnium has 6 events, and riders ride setups that are optimized for the event. This includes a time trial setup (https://pbs.twimg.com/media/B90OseoIYAABkje.jpg:large) and a mass-start setup (https://pbs.twimg.com/media/B90PMZDIUAAL1MA.jpg) (Elia Viviani's bike).

The Hour Record is a time trial, so if you're going to change the old hour record rules, it makes more sense to allow time trial bikes than to allow modernization, but a setup for a different race discipline.

Hmmm, not sure why my pic isn't coming through. I can see it.... but either way, you're right.

I had been under the impression that the UCI went to the pursuit rules for the hour record because there wasn't another good set of rules that was updated for the times. But it seems to me that whatever rules dictate the mass start bike set-up are the more in line with the historic hour record bikes... modifications to the materials and wheels, but maintaining the position and look of the road bike.

I guess the pursuit rules make sense given the distance and solo nature of the effort. Just seems the mass start rules would have been more appropriate in keeping with the spirit of the hour record.
