Hi folks,

I'm interested in upgrading my bike to Sram Red 22.

If I purchase the groupset with FD yaw braze on, RD short cage, Brakes, X-glide cassette.. what cranksets can I use?

I know the Force 22 and Red 22 cranksets are compatible.

Is it possible to use other cranksets like FSA? What are your recommendations. I would like a 50/34 crankset.

Thanks!

at that point, you might be better off just getting the force 22 crank; usually there's a bit of price break for full group versus piece-by-piece. the sram 10 and 11 speed rings are interchangeable, so you should be fine with basically "whatever."

For performance including a BB and chainring longevity, I'd get a 9000, 6800 or 5800 crank and BB.

I'd stay away from anything FSA.

But if you want 'upgrade', upgrade to 9000 or 6800 or even Chorus. Function, longevity much better than sram, imho.

Why not get the Red 22 crank if you're getting the rest of the group? SRAM makes a 50/34 Red crank. Another option is to get praxis rings and use whatever crank floats your boat. They'll shift fine with an otherwise SRAM group.

Thanks for the options.

Will probably go the route of getting a SRAM Red 22 compact crank off ebay.

Not sure the Force 22 crank saves enough money to justify the additional weight.

Here is an interesting read/review on cranks.

sorry i meant "get the red crank" in my post. i believe "force" snuck in there because that's what i'm currently eyeballing

point was: get the full group if you're this close anyway.

Ya trying to snag a compact Red 22 crank off ebay for under $300.

One more question for you guys..

The set does not come with a chain, or cables.

What do you recommend for each

I've heard people recommending Jagwire and Yokozuna reaction. Opinions and best places to purchase.. thanks!

I'd stay away from Yokozuna. I don't find they improve shifting or braking and the housing is stiff enough to make routing tough on smaller frames. The jagwires are fine, but if you can find the old Gore cables they'll make the shifting great. I think the SRAM slickwire cables are pretty similar to the Gore, if not the same.

For chains, I use SRAM Red22, KMC X11SL, and Shimano DA all pretty interchangeably. I like the master link on the Red and KMC for easy install.

grab an updated "2012/13" 10spd crank from ebay (not the first gen) and praxis rings. the arms of the 12/13 and new 22 don't seem different to me (besides minor changes to rings)

you could use a hollowgram, specially if the frame is BB30 or PF30

Was gonna say. If frame is bb30 pf30 friendly then hollowgram with spidering is pretty hot. Otherwise sram works fine and wont look lame mismatched. ive done mismatched. It looks lame.

I race a Sram SRM on a Di2 bike. I guess that makes me part of the lame group. Good to know.
