40 years since I owned a bike with a bell. I am tired of telling people along the way which way I am going just to have them step or ride into my path. I am going with a bell. I hunted for one that didn't look like a kids bell or something that came off a 1800's carriage. I finally bellied up for a bell from Spurcycle. Well, it's everything they say it is and is very nice. I mounted it to a headset spacer and it's awesome.
If you are ever in the looking for a nice accent that works really well, check them out.

Than is all. Have a great day.

Bike with bell. Hmmm! you're ready to move to florida. is your bike a tricycle? :-) just kidding. one way i get around using a bell is having my front brake adjusted to screech loud. has the same effect on having people take notice.

+1 on that.
I will also add that every single time I ring the bells on my bikes I see someone smile.

I'm leading a group of about 10 people on the Tour De Cure in April and I'm determined that every damn one of them will have a bel on their bikes even if I have to buy them and mount them myself!

Since I moved back into the city and started grinding on the canal roads, I encounter a lot more people. Really, a bell is MUCH preferable to voice. The cheerful ding seems to go over a lot better than "on your left!"

Guess which complete and total badass owns this:

I'm trying to leave broad hints to the Fam since my birfday is fast approaching.

I have one on my commuter/rando bike...

On my commuters, I have two each: one on the stem and one on the shifter cables. Both bikes have bar end shifters, and the small EasyDo bell on the shifter cable means that I can ring the bell from the drops. They are probably overkill, but those bikes aren't light.

I have a spurcycle bell as well and i am very happy wit it. The moubting system is clever, sound is loud and it looks real good... I am convinced its the only bell that actually looks good on a modern bike. They really did a good job with the construction and design of that thing.

I would have one on every bike if it wasnt so expensive.

Good to have some feedback from someone who actually uses it.
I was about to pull the trigger when they had their Kickstarter initiative going but wasn't sure...

+1 The black version on a black handlebar virtually disappears. Yet the hammer is easily accessible and the ring is loud, but not unpleasant. Worth the $$, imo.

I run a little electric "horn" that makes the sound of a euro police siren.

Pulled the trigger during their Kickstarter initiative and I'm glad I did - great bells. Spurcycle even sent me (and all backers I believe) a 15% off coupon last year so now I have them on all my bikes.

I have a brass one on my commuter bike that makes a nice little "bringgg.....bringgg" sound. It's so much more pleasant than shouting "on your left!" when you are approaching someone from behind.

Roy explained that when Bruno Roy races in the singlespeed events on the East Coast, she races with the men, "the bell is an equivalent to a butt-tap when she needs to get by them."

Have 'em on all my bikes here in the D.C. area, as the paths are crowded. And a melodic bell is so much more polite that shouting at folks. There are some brass models that look nice and really make a pleasant sound.

Has anybody noticed if people with earbuds respond to a bell better than they respond to voice "on your left"?

Not in my experience. I stopped putting bells on my commuters because of this. No one can hear them over their headphones and they are going to get startled/pissed when I ride past them anyhow.

I've found the bell to be more effective than just my voice. There's no getting through to someone who's got their music turned up to 11, but I feel like my bell is fairly effective with most folks with earbuds.

I have stopped calling "on your left" since it seems that about 30% of the time it results in the person actually moving to their left. :bike:

I jumped in on the Spurcycle bells when they were on Kickstarter and they are just the best. I picked up a couple of them.

Really well made (it was interesting to observe the product development from afar), plenty loud, they look great, and they're fairly compact.

I'll get dorkified any time with one of these.

I put a bell on my normal road bike when I take it on vacation. The riding can take place on either MUT/bike paths or roadways. The bell always gets a cheerful, welcoming reaction when pedestrians or other bikes see and hear me coming alongside them on the path - because they hear the sound of the bell and it's outta the blue for when they see the bell being on a Pro-bike.

A bell on a full on racing bike ridden by a rider equivalently decked out in Sidi, Assos et al. Most of the time, riders on Pro-bikes come across as serious and self absorbed so the ring-ring of the bell doesn't jibe with the typical image & perception of the bike. But I'm just enjoying the day - I'm on vacation riding in a place I truly love to ride. Ring-ring, Ring-ring. 12mph.

The extra bonus is you don't use any of your precious breath yelling "On Your Left". Save your breath for blowing their doors off.

FWIW- It's the law here in NY that you have a bell (or some other mechanical noisemaker) on your bike.

And yes, they will ticket you. I know this from experience.

I have a horn similar this (given to me by my sister as a joke) but given where 99.999% of my rides are, I haven't bothered to install it.

I don't think bells classify as dorkified. Putting pin stripping to try and make your fork kinda match your frame is more like dorkifing ones bike, so my friends say :)

In Central Park in the mid 70's we used to yell "Stay Straight!" as we approached people. worked much better as it didn't require the person to turn around and look or interpret.
Kind of obnoxious, though.
Nowadays I just slow down and let people do whatever they want....

I have a killer whale horn on my touring bike. The horn is much more effective in high-traffic pedestrian areas than a bell.
