View Full Version : Are you as tired of neon colors as I am?

They're EVERYWHERE and they were bad enough in the 80's. But now . . . Yuck. Anybody else refusing to jump on the neon bandwagon?

If you had the chance, would you refrain from using those neon colors if you did your album over again?;)

Neon colors don't bother me in cycling gear because they are functional and increase safety. What bothers me more is cyclists and runners wearing all black and riding/running in the dark or near dark with only a small blinkie light for visibility. I see a lot more ninja cyclists than I do neon warriors.

Nope. I dig neon for any ride with four or fewer riders. The more garish the better.

Just checked outside my office window (in lower Manhattan) and everyone's in black. Wait! There's somebody in a beige overcoat!
Dunno, Dave, maybe its an upstate thing.

BTW, Oregon deserved to lose, ATMO, solely for those uniforms.

+1. There have been several times when I've been driving after sunset and all I can see of a runner are the reflective patches built into their shoes. It's scary. I don't think people realize how difficult they are to see.

I don't have a real prob with neon due to the fact that its so freaking overcast where I live most of the time the drab tones can be soul sucking!

As far as runners and such in black, I actually have a tougher time seeing people in poor light when they're wearing grey.

I love it. Although I've was wearing all black before it became the trend. My friends in the early 90's used to call me Johnny Cash as they wore their neon.
Seriously though, seeing all the neon makes me happy.

Most times neon will affect motorists by making them want to avoid you.

Occasionally it will have the opposite effect, I would think.

Uhg.

I wear black, white, and red... thems my colors. They are NOT hi-viz, and I don't feel like I'd feel any safer in hi-viz..... I mean, I ride around with atomic-bomb/crack-of-dawn blinkies and people drive right out in front of me looking me straight in the eye.

If I may edit for a case-in-point - I sit here in my sweaty riding kit after tonight's ride, wherein a guy pulled out from a stop sign in front of me, looking right at me, as I came pounding up a short hill on a blvd.... after slamming on my brakes and throwing my arms up in the air at him, he glared at me and flipped me the bird. AYFKM?

---

But to answer the question: No, I dig neon stuff. Makes me nostalgic. Hot pink and neon green and whatever they called that bright ass orange- that crap came out when I was growing up, and I loved it then... love it even more now, being a fond part of my childhood.

You don't see the irony in your statement? I have bike commuted year-round for 8 years and 30,000+ miles -- usually wearing neon yellow gear -- and drivers have rarely ever pulled out in front of me. I can count the number of times it has happened on one hand. I also have a powerful light system, including a helmet light, but neon has it's advantages over lights in certain conditions. Eg, it's probably more visible in daylight than most lights.

Is there any benefit to wearing fluro over white? When I'm driving at night, unless the clothes have reflectors (like a safety vest), I can rarely distinguish the color of a cyclists attire unless my headlights are on them. But my eyes can make out "bright" and "not bright".

I've seen some cyclists strap knogs around the hubs of their wheel (two per hubs). It creates this dazzling strobing effect while their wheels are in motion. Definitely got my attention more than stationary handlebar/helm mounted lights, and sounds like a cheap, overly effective alternative to changing up your wardrobe (assuming you don't have fluro cyclist clothing already)

You're confused: You probably live in a city, and if you're commuting, your average speed is probably slower than mine. Here in Hickville USA, it's not that they don't see me, it's that they don't care/hate me. They don't want to wait for me, they definitely don't want to get stuck behind me, so they gun it, failing to realize I'm going twice or three times faster than they think I am. Sometimes I run my front light on steady, in the hope of causing a moment of doubt in their minds that I can seize to sprint through the intersection.... because when they see that blinking light, they know "oh ····, it's a slow ass biker... better go so I don't get stuck behind him." Etc.

For on the bike, running, etc. - big fan
For everything else - don't really care either way

My wife and I have decided to get pretty much only hi-viz bike stuff. I've noticed several times groups of riders around here where one guy is in neon yellow and the rest are all in something not neon. At a distance you can pick out the guy in neon instantly but the others kinda blend in with the background.

Night riding is different, the blinky/lights are a bigger factor there. It seems to be more of a factor for daytime riding.
