But with virtually zero snow in the high country next summer is shaping up to be the worst of this drought cycle...

Winter in CNY really sucks for bikers. Cold, snow, slush, salty roads. I hear in Colorado it snows then its sunny and you can ride!

However, I like green grass, trees, lakes and ponds so a winter of snow and ice is the payment, I guess.

Just goes to show that you guys obviously have some circulation issues if you need arm/knee/leg warmers in those conditions.

I got a knee that barks at me in anything less than 75 degrees if its uncovered. And it was really 60 or so when I rolled out.

But it was still perfect in every way for January. There was a slight breeze, which meant some roads had a little headwind.

Really rude of Mother Nature, honestly.

Couldn't be worse than the snowstorm of Winter 1995-96, when the snow was 2.5 feet. NYC actually shut down - no auto traffic allowed. Probably the most peaceful NYC ever was. You could walk anywhere without worrying about being hit by a car, taxi or bus.

Nevertheless, I expect Fat Bike sales to soar. :hello::rolleyes:

You'd think these people never saw snow in January. It's gonna snow, we're all gonna get more pale, people with kids are gonna hug the school teacher when school gets back in session. It's. Gonna. Be. Epic.

I plan on drinking a ton of coffee, hitting the rollers and canceling my Wednesday travel.

I went for a run along the Greenway on the East River side over the 1230 hour. Then it was more sleet-like with the occasional strong wind gust. Not too bad even for 25F but the wind made it a PITA.

Now at 1630 it is snowing lightly in town. And most companies have prepared for working out-of-office tomorrow so unless there's big news, the markets should be quietly low-volume tomorrow too. So we'll just wait and see how much snow we get and how much hassle it makes to get through it.

In prior years I enjoyed the exercise of shoveling the walks & the driveway of my house. This I no longer have to do now as an apartment dweller. But I miss it for the quiet sound of snow falling and the breath of exertion in concert together while marked by the inexorable swath created by a snow shovel.

Blasio hinted to stay out of the NYC Parks because the heavy snow could cause a tree branch to fall on you. If they don't close Central Park I will go over there tonight with the dog. Central Park after it snows is beautiful, serene and deserted. Well...deserted relative to what is possible for Central Park.

Reminds me of a guy from highschool. He was an adrenaline junkie - rock climber, snow boarder...you name it. In high school he was famous for jumping out of a third story window at a party that was being busted and breaking his leg.

He grew up to become a park ranger. He was in the news once for fighting off an attack by two bears. He fought fires from helicopters, rescued skiers...etc.

Anyway - one day he comes to work at the office, ice slides off of the roof and onto his head and kills him. So anti-climatic. We all knew he'd die early, but we thought it would be in a revolution, or being attacked by polar bears riding killer whales.

The Mayor wasn't making idle chatter when he warned about not going into NYC parks during the snow storm. One of the perks of being mayor is what is said is tantamount to an order so Central Park is indeed closed. As seen at the Fifth Avenue and 72nd Street entrance to the Park.

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-6ohmV3rAKBY/VMcJ22Q_NgI/AAAAAAAAAwE/Z9yMpz0GCbQ/s640/DSC00888.JPG

These barricades do all multitude of function:
denotes the Park is closed in no uncertain terms
identifying by presence all those that enter as illegal and eligible to fine and prosecution
indemnifies the City of New York for any legal claims should injury or death occur by falling tree branches within the confines of the Park
A true, multi-function device topped only by the swiss army knife or by sliced bread.

There's not that much snow on the ground, the snow in the picture is the depth by way of pushover from the snowplows running down Fifth. Let's keep our fingers crossed this blizzard becomes a non-event.

Well, CNN is reporting 15" snow in Boston not 6", but yes. The mega-snow-apocalypse that was widely predicted by so many weather pros did not materialize. Or has it yet? Wonder how they could get this wrong. Maybe the winds shifted or the weather pattern from the north changed overnight.

Tough to say actual snowfall amount here near the MA/CT/RI border due to drifting, but I'd say at least 16" so far and it's coming down hard. Very light and fluffy fortunately. High winds are the main issue the closer you get to the shore which contributes to storm surge. Nantucket is without power totally off the grid, and Pilgrim Nuclear was shut down at 4am as a precautionary measure.

DRZRM
01-27-2015, 07:59 AM
Yeah, Boston still feels like a blizzard. Well over a foot on my garbage cans and car, but the roofs are being blown off pretty well, maybe 6 inches. They are predicting another foot or so today, so still seems right in the initial prediction range of more than 2 feet. What's nice is that it is pretty light so far, so shoveling out the steps and making space for the dogs to go out in the yard has not been too hard.

Somewhere between 18-24 inches here, hard to tell for sure with so many drifts. Luckily, it's light, but shoveling the driveway is gonna be a back breaker. Oy.

Poor dogs. How can they pee and poop when they are trudging in 2-3 ft of snow?!?!

Bad call by de Blasio to close all roads, issuing a $350 misdemeanor to anyone who dared leave their home.
(I can understand ticketing anyone who got stuck, but there are a lot of 4WD vehicles)

Welcome to the police state. It snowed so "shelter in place".

I'm gonna go play on my carbide spiked 600 thumper...

Just back in from running the blower. real light stuff here, my machine was throwing a serious plume, easy job on the blower and the back today.

In honesty, i'm happy about the bad call. i got everything prepped at work yyesterday to stay home today and play with my kid in the park on our new sled. looking forward to a fun day of snowmen, hot chocolate and red wine.

a little easier here in new jersey ,about 10 miles from the atlantic anyways....its been been falling/blowin around in the powder configuration since last nite ,maybe 10 inches so far ....once upon a time i had 5 labs so my first priority was to dig paths thru the snow and small clearings for their business when it got really deep...they werent too fussy though, they were all good with walking and peeing male and female alike:fight:

I did the same for my dog, and then blocked him from running right back in as the snow was blowing into his ears. He eventually powered through.

A first for de Blasio:

Absolutely no reason to shut down the subways.

Going to head out soon to take a first pass with the snowblower.

Path to the end of the driveway and knock down the snowplow berm.

The rest can wait until later.

I am wondering whether we will have school tomorrow or not. They will need to clear sidewalks and remove a bunch of snow for parking, etc.

I actually hate snow days....

Will someone tell this midwesterner (for whom snow is part of life) why the east coast, which annually gets a storm or two like this, refers to each one as historic and allows huge cities to shut down?

I've been living and working on the east coast of the US since 2004. Each winter there's one or two of these and the chaos is unbelievable. And each time even a few inches causes airports and roads to be closed. Mayors are practically declaring martial law in their cities, closing roads.

What is up with this? It's not like these storms are 'historic', which is the language that gets trotted out every year. If Chicago or Minneapolis or Detroit or Milwaukee (name your least favorite Midwestern city) panicked every time it snowed they'd just get laughed at.

I realized that Boston is getting actual high winds and a lot of snow. New York is getting enough to cause some real problems at the airports and on some roads. Yes, people should use common sense. Washington got about an inch and a half and schools were delayed and some closed. Really?

But why is every storm on the east coast treated like some once-in-a-century event? For the ten winters I've been flying on the east coast, I've witnessed this every year once or twice. So it's not like people can use the excuse that it never happens. It happens all the time.

after sandy, the administration doesnt want to get blamed for "missing" another weather event...pretty simple rationale i think

so every storm is billed as the 100 year storm even though we just had one a few years ago

no doubt sandy was a huge cluster-you know what

Over 2 feet so far here on the Cape by the canal. Just shoveled out the car and got it ready to billy goat out in the morning. The winds have been brutal.

Did a sweet trail ride last night right as the storm started. Hoping to go again shortly. The trails are too deep now but we can hack around the nearby neighborhoods.

Not sure I like the style of this thread.

If Dr. Lucy Jones at Caltech built a machine that could forecast earthquakes with the same rate of success of weather forecasting and she predicted an 8.5-9.0 (THE BIG ONE) quake for the weekend, but instead a 6.2 would occur (damaging one or two towns), you know would happen in all of California.

We would party on Monday.

Of course, some cats here would claim that it was all fear mongering or a media conspiracy.

Glad you're safe, NYC.:fight:

Here you go. For Scale you can just barely see the top of the my stone wall - as any new englander can tell you - a stone wall is typically 3 feet. The 2 big boulders things are like the entrance.

And, no, my wife isn't 3 feet tall. She was just pooped and taking a breather in the snow. :)

On a side note: I love how if NYC and DC didn't get hit it's like it didn't happen. OK, sure, whatever . . . we're still going to the super bowl.

We got about 24"+ as predicted and some high winds, so I don't think the forecast here was off, but the hysteria and hyperbole certainly exceeded the intensity of the storm. It's effing winter in New England, we'll deal with it.

People were going nuts at the supermarkets yesterday, saw a couple people start going at it. I don't get it. The media only contributes to the madness.

Luckily, it's the nicest snow I've seen in a long time here in the northeast - nice, light, fluffy stuff. Reminds me of Utah powder.

We've gotten well over 2 feet here. The wife and I got a long walk in (driving ban is in effect) and some XC ski.

Agreed. The problem of numerical weather prediction is an immensely difficult task, which we as a society have made tremendous progress on over the past 40 yrs, primarily through advances in computing power and satellite observing systems (purchased by your generous tax dollars). The primary mission of the NWS is not to generate hysteria-based add revenue, but rather to prevent the loss of life and property. Policy makers and elected officials do their best with the information given, but it is simply impossible (due to nonlinearities and imperfect observations) to predict the future with the level of detail and precision that is ultimately needed to make important and potentially life-saving yes/no decisions. Thus, it comes down to a judgement call, where erring on the side of caution could potentially save lives but leads to scorn when the storm tracks slightly to the east of the ensemble-mean forecast. In the future, the media (and the NWS) need to do a better job at communicating the probabilistic nature of the forecast so that the public understands there is a range of possible outcomes.
