View Full Version : Richard Sachs Maiden Voyage ride...

Well, we finally got a beautiful spring day that I _wasn't_ working,
so I got in a metric century today on the Geesawa.

What's to say? Any praise would make it sound like a surprise that
it rides like a dream, fits like a glove, puuuuurrs like a cat. I will say
that it's more solid feeling than I expected. It's been a while since I've
spent any time a standard, as in non oversize, steel tubeset.

The balance is sublime. Handles quick, but is very sure and stable.
If I could just stop looking at it, i'd forget all about it during a ride,
which is just about the highest priase I can use to describe any bike.

It's pretty funny going from 15lb carbon wonderbikes back and forth
with classic lugged steel. What conclusion can I draw from that? For one,
Richard's geometry is dialed, and that's the #1 thing that makes a bike
right. If it fits, and handles right, everything else is "out of the points"
as they say in F1. The slightly longer wheelbase and the magic formula
he has up front makes for a very enjoyable ride. Why the world is locked into
43mm rake forks, I just can't understand.

Enjoy the pics...

Grant,

I'm glad it rides as good as it looks. When you told me you were getting a road version of what I had Richie do for my track bike I was instantly jealous. Great Job!

Grant,
Congratulations - hopefully you will have more good weather to properly test out the bike.

Have you ordered the next one yet?

Have a good ride,

Congrats on the fine ride. I feel the same way about what used to be your bike's next-door neighbor at JB's.

Looking at the picture with the squirrel. the frame looks like it has some slope to it. Could you imagine a 4-6% sloping lugged top tube on a Sachs? It could be the perfect bike.

I hear ya. I've given up trying to veer out of their way when I'm driving. Best I can figure, I'm doing Charles Darwin's good work by taking the dumb ones out of the gene pool.

Those damn squirrels were everywhere looking for a handout!
I think they need some tiny bikes to get those guys a workout,
they are fat!

The old Singer bikes wrap first from the top to the handlebar lever split and then from the bottom up, so that there is no tape ends at all except on the inside behind the levers. Somewhere out there there's a photo of this style. It's quite beautiful though it's done with cotton tape and then shellac'd.

Grant, your bike is magnificent. Congrats and ride it everywhere, all the time.

Thanks Douglas.

I actually haven't spent much time finishing up the details of the build,
and i'm not super-happy with some of these little things. I'll do better.

The funny thing about this bike is that it only turns certain heads.
I think I could leave it in front of a 7-11 and come back in a couple of
hours and it'd still be there. For those who can "see" what it's all about,
I think Richard knocked it out of the park.

But clearly, i couldn't get this guy's attention in his 911 turbo. I was yelling
"it's go time!", but he wouldn't race...

What is the rake on your fork?

e-RICHIE
04-05-2006, 08:49 AM
What is the rake on your fork?
it's the curvey section, normally measured
from the imaginary centerline protruding
from the head angle - forward to the point
at which the hub axle rests.

Sailor-
Nitto Jaguar post, bar and stem are ITM.
For some reason, the Japanese can't bend a bar to a shape I like,
leave it to the Italians. The stem is the gnoccia, I removed the logo,
and the bar is "super-italia pro 260"

Hi Rob,

Thanks for asking!

I think it's about 49 or 50mm.

Sorry for the slow reply!

Sounds archaic. You could've gotten a new, any size "x-brand" bike w/a 43 rake.
