A couple of weeks ago, Exonerv pal tipped us off about a Merlin titanium cyclocross on Seattle craigslist. (http://forums.thepaceline.net/showthread.php?t=161508)

It's been a while since I own a cross bike, used to have a Redline Conquest but sold it and the last time I had a titanium bike in my stable was back 6 or 7 years ago when I gave up the Seortta Legend Ti. Plus I have the intentions of doing some loaded touring in the near future, so, naturally I was very excited to see this bike up for sale as it seems to fit the bill perfectly. I remembered the first time I saw a Merlin in the bike shop maybe 10 or 15 years ago, I was so captivated by its satin finish and the impeccable welds, and then I did what every shoppers do, I flipped the price tag and it was like "Whoa! This is waaaaaay out of my league." :)

Fast forward to present.
So, Exonerv pal posted a link to the ad, I responded by asking for help with any locals who might be able to facilitate the sale. There's where KidWok pal comes into the picture. Tai pal kindly volunteered himself. And the rest is history as they say....nah, I wrote a little "thank you" note on the Classified section. But I thought this deserves a bigger exposure, so I am cutting and pasting it over here. What Tai pal did for me is incredible. Thank you my friend.

---------------------------------------
Just got word from kid pal yesterday that the bike is making its way from Seattle to Texas!

Can't say enough of just how much I am grateful and in awe of what tai pal did on my behalf... volunteered himself to go check out the bike, contacted the seller, scheduled a time, drove to his place, did a thorough inspection on the spot down to how much life is left on the chain (75%! ), called me immediately to report on his findings, used his own money to pay for it up front, loaded it up in his car, brought it home, took up limited living space, went out and found a box, took the bike apart and packed it very nicely with foams and the necessary protection, found the most economical and secured way to ship with tracking number, basically treated it like his own from start to finish -- and get this! Only when the bike get shipped out, did he gave me the final amount of which I paid immediately through PayPal.

Everything he did, he did it out of his own volition, at his own time and resources - Tai and i have never met in person, i may well be a total stranger to him but yet he reached out to me and rendered help unconditionally.

What do y'all call this?

Brotherly love, friendship, human kindness, generosity, community spirit.

Priceless!

Thank you Tai pal, you have set a very high bar, i hope when the time comes, I would do the same for you or any of my pals here.

This bike will have a special meaning to it and a neat story to tell.

FedEx delivered the bike yesterday. It's been raining the last two days, so haven't got the chance to take it out yet but judging by the looks, I definitely hit the jackpot on this one, everything is in immaculate condition, thanks again to KidWok pal.

Weisan, you really did hit the jackpot....certainly with the bike; it's a gem. But also, with the generosity of Exonerv for posting the PSA for all of us, and especially for KidWok for his stellar service to you. You're correct, that bike carries with it a great backstory.

I remain jealous- that's one nice bike! How about a shot of you aboard your new steed with an ear-to-ear grin?

What a great post to read on a cold, dreary Friday. Seriously. It warms my heart to read stuff like this. Glad it worked out and, man, there was time I would put those paul calipers on a credit card @ 25% interest!!!!!!

Ok, let me put it this way without going into the dramatics....it's FREAKIN' AWESOME!!!

It's nothing like my old Serotta Legend Ti. It got a different feel to it. The best way to describe it is...it seems like the bike has a life of its own. That unique spring-ing-ness associated with Titanium. The thing is ALIVE! I LOVE IT!

It fits me perfectly. In my mind, I am already cooking up plans about "Bilenky-ing" it....nah, I will take it slow. I already got the Taylor to do travel duties and such, no hurry. But man, talk about getting a great deal and an awesome bike, 2015 is off to a good start! ;)

No eyelets on my Merlin but nothing that can't be solved with a few simple tools :p

Fender + 45mm Resist Nomad installed in front with plenty of room left between the Winwood fork.

The rear on the hand is approaching its limit with fender and 35mm Pasela, can probably go up to 38 and that's more than enough for me.

TeX bike, next time I will play a lullaby to coax you to sleep...

I thought I might share this information from Kirk pal. I asked him what are the tell tale signs that this frame were built in the days at Cambridge. Here's his reply:

"The tell-tale signs are the head tube (looks like 1") and what I can see of the decal, the welded on binder boss and the down tube shifter bosses. Oh, and the fact that it's a CX bike. All things we never did at Merlin Chattanooga."

Very interesting...thanks Kirk pal!

I have taken the Merlin out to test water in the rough and tumble trails several times now ...I still can't believe the good fortune I had with my pals getting this bike into my hands. It rides so well and looks the part too, there's almost nothing it can't do - totally killed my lust for say a Firefly or a Moots, it's THAT good, not kidding.

Thanks again Exonerv and Tai pals, forever indebted to both of you. :hello:

I love how the spoke nips are different colors. :) Careful though...if you spend enough time on big tires, you won't enjoy your skinny tire bikes as much. I take my do-all bike out now even on road rides!

Tai pal, you are so right. I was trying to decide which bike I want to ride on yesterday... With rain in the forecast, I decided on the Merlin since it has fenders on. I was a bit worried that the Ritchey Speedmax tires will slow me down and gives a sluggish ride... Well, it did but you can't beat the all terrain versatility, I was able to ride anywhere I want, turn off into any unbeaten paths at will, it was a blast! The weather turned out to be super nice 70s, the rain was held off until this morning. I did not regret one bit having picked the Merlin for the ride. It was the right decision :D

Serious props to Kid Wok!
When I saw the PSA I thought, "I want that sucker" (but I just wasn't comfortable asking for someone to facilitate).
I'm glad you guys found one another because it seems like you love that bike and are going to ride the hell out of it. (If you flipped it after that the Paceline would send a hit man). ;)

Thank you Avalon pal. I will confess to a past history of flippin', it usually involves a bike that doesn't fit so well and it will take me quite a while before I go that route because I believe in giving everyone or bike a fair chance. :)
After all these years of trial and error, I can pretty much tell at the first couple of rides whether I am gonna keep a bike for good. I can confidently say the Merlin is a keeper. :D
If I ever stray, I appreciate my pals sending this man to set me straight. :p
