Question for MXL experts (different seat stay brazing)

I am a big fan of EM MXL. I have owned a lot of them and am confused as to how the builders decided to braze the seat stays to the seat lug. I had one that I liked the best. It was a 1992 Motorola and the seat stays were simply mitered to the shape of the seat lug and brazed. The others I have come by all have caps or plugs, that look like caps.

Does anyone know if it was just individual builder preference or by year? I like the clean look of the one without the caps.

The pic below is of my bike which has the 1st gen seatstay treatment. Notice the flattened MAX tubing used for the stays? My understanding is that the version you like was used after this generation and before the round stays (SLX?) with caps/plugs.
