Greetings friends! So, in the last week, I bought two Bilato TSX Lemond frames from the early 90's. One is white, one is red. Very excited to get them. I'm thinking about refinishing the white one but I'll have to make that decision once the frame gets to my house. Pictures will be coming soon.

Anyhow, I'm trying to decide what groups to put on them. I'm going to do the white one first. I'm pretty sure that I'm going to put on Ultegra 6500. Group is available, affordable, bombproof, and quite attractive.

What would you do?

That's what is was thinking. The 6500 group is currently my favorite "vintage" Shimano group.

You think like I do. The white is definitely getting the black stuff (wheel wise) and the 7400 is under serious consideration. Might have to look for some black Record for the white.

Both my bikes are Campagnolo, but here is my setup:

I do have a set of all silver tubular wheels for the tecno that are not pictured. Edit: wow, this is way out of date. I've got an xa stem, cinelli 64 bars, and delta brakes on the tecno now. Anyway, it still shows the contrast.

I think 7400 with downtubes and 8spd and the late record 10spd with ultratorque will give you two groups that represent some of the best stuff both companies have offered. It will also give you two unique bikes. Both groups shouldn't break the bank either.

I've got an all silver Centaur gruppo I pulled off my Z-team bike.....loved it on mine, but had to move it to fund something else for the time being while the Z-team bike takes a break. PM me if interested....its a bike in a box...BB, chain, cables, etc.

Wow, 6500 is "vintage" Who'da thought??

I use 6500 and agree with what the OP says about it - great groupset.

I was riding it before I could drive... Shoot, there are people out there driving that were born after 6500 was released.

6500 is fine, but I'm holding strong to my recommendation.

One with 1994/5/6 Campagnolo Record and one with 2015 Chorus.

It will take some scouring of ebay, but the *proper* thing to do would be to build it up with the final Mavic mechanical gruppo....

I second the 6500 suggestion. Looks great, works great, and you can ride it till the wheels fall off.

The Athena 11 stuff sure is pretty, the polished alu looks very classic IMO. And ribble has them cheap...

How about a silver athena group with a compact and 29t on the red bike and chorus with a standard on the white bike? Make the red one more of an all rounder and the white one the go fast rig. This would make both groups an easy new purchase vs a used hunt.
