Admittedly i've always been confused. the other thread awakens my confusion.

let's say someone gets thrown in jail and bail is set at $2.5M. What does that actually mean? Someone introduced the term "bond", bail bond? Someone clear up my confusion.

We know that mods get in trouble too from time to time. We expect only the best from you, and I guess a $2.5 million bail is vying for the best.

If Angry's in trouble I'll contribute $5 to help bail him out.

Bail?

... with a moniker like 'AngryScientist', I fear it may have been spitting on a climate change denier.

Or something equally nefarious.

Another subtle difference is that if get out with the help of a bail bond company, and then you skip out without appearing in court, you now have two groups angry at you and looking to find you (the courts, and the bail bond company, who could be out the bail paid to the court). Since they have a financial stake, the bail bond company may hire a bounty hunter to hunt down someone who has fled.

Think of it as the court financially incentivizing you to return. If you do not have the coin, there are enterprises that will "loan" you the cash, in which case they have every incentive to encourage you to show up for your court date.

True stories:

Years ago I went to a prison a few times to visit I guy I knew from work who had been arrested for murdering his wife and step-daughter (arson). The first time was just a few days after the arrest. It wasn't fun.

His mother hired one of the best lawyers in St Louis who had no trouble at all (deliberations were very short) convincing the jury that it was suicide, so he was acquitted.

Some other guys I know from work go every now and then to visit another guy I knew who did murder his wife and kid. Lifetime sentence. Not sure if he'll ever come up for parole or not. He was the manager/coach of the work softball team I played on for a few years. Nice guy (I thought) but apparently he just snapped. Not sure why.

You never know what's going on in someone's head...

You work with enough people long enough and eventually some of them will have big problems. As I said, one of them was acquitted.

I left out all the suicides (didn't know them very well).

A buddy of mine ...a bunch of us used to all play basketball and softball together and hang out every weekend...
Nice guy, never in a bad mood...
If you read the story, an interesting tidbit is he had a bad arm/shoulder that was essentially useless....

So, what do you think of the end result?

In my case, for Buddy #1 accused of arson, I don't think he did it. Buddy #2 admitted to killing them (with a frying pan) so there was no real trial, just sentencing. So in both cases (IMO) the law got it right.

all I know about bail bondsman, I learned from an audio book by Chelsea Handler, so take it with a grain of salt. Apparenlty, they can charge a fairly decent interest rate on the loan they make. Mostly because they stand to lose the loan if you jump bail

Ok... So I am showing how huge of a dork I am, but one of my favorite shows to watch on TV is Forensic Files. There is an episode that sounds exactly like that story. Was that story featured on Forensic Files?

Here's someone who's just might need bail soon (or to have his head examined)

At least she isn't a Manti Te'o type imaginary girlfriend.

DOVER, Del. (AP) — The NASCAR driver known as "The Outlaw" testified Tuesday he believes his ex-girlfriend is a trained assassin dispatched on covert missions around the world who once returned to him in a blood-splattered gown.

"Everybody on the outside can tell me I'm crazy, but I lived on the inside and saw it firsthand," Kurt Busch said when his attorney, Rusty Hardin, questioned why he still believed Patricia Driscoll is a hired killer.

Not sure, I never watched FF. Not sure I would want to see another show about it...all a bit surreal. Flo was really nice...Marc a good friend...

I just remember watching TV with my wife and the the NBC show came on and I said to her: "That's Marc!"

This thread brings back fond memories. I was a hippie bail bondsman (after the Fillmore closed). Early '70's and after Bill Grahams Fillmore closed I was in need of a job. Avy, Bill Grahams nephew was working for Bondsman Jeffrey Pollock of North Beach Bail Bonds (https://notoriouslcm.wordpress.com/2010/01/01/jeffrey-pollack-legendary-san-francisco-music-promoter/ ) and his partner Jerry Barrish ( http://www.sfgate.com/movies/article/Plastic-Man-documents-art-life-of-5762688.php ). Anyway Avy had recently bailed me out of jail ( I wuz framed I'll save that story for another time) and we were talking about missing the Fillmore where he and I worked together. Knowing I needed work he suggested I try getting a Bail Bondsman license. Long story short I did and started working for North Beach Bailbonds, which was later named Jerry Barrish Bailbonds after Barrish bought out Pollock. We handled the majority of rock and roll client busts, Hells angels, Black Panthers and just standard marijuana and drunk drivers. One of these days I'll sit down to gather my thoughts and write a brief story of my experiences during the days of all those Summer's of Love.
BTW I was riding a beautiful cx Jack Taylor to work during those days while working as a Bondsman.

In the early 90s we had a masters racer on our team that was eccentric.
He says he was humiliated by the IRS and set out to bomb their buildings, was eventually caught and is serving a 40 year stretch in Oklahoma (last I knew)
Was profiled on the TV show Americas most wanted or something like that

Funny, sort of, (or coincidental) because we rented Schwinns on the corner of Haight and Ashbury in 1969 and rode around Golden Gate Park. My bike broke a chain and my dad towed be back to the shop.
We had friends that had moved up to Palo Alto from SoCal, so we would drive the Chevy station wagon up there every summer to reconnect.

I think we really need a 6 degrees of Paceline Forum app!

Nope...met him a few times, he didn't hang out with us. He was about Flo's height...she was ~6'... I'm much shorter than that ... Real tragedy...poor kids...either the father essentially orphaned the kids or he was falsely convicted...
