Last night, my wife and I saw Heart of Gold. We really enjoyed the concert, but made me want to pull out Everybody Knows This is Nowhere. His performances in the film were great, but it made me want to hear him rock again.

If anyone in the forum saw the film, let me know if you thought one tune was a tribute to Rick Danko. I don't remember the tune, but it seemed like his singing style tried to copy Danko's, and the arrangement sounded like the Band.

Thanks,
Byron

White man?

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=white+man's+overbite

{scene: above scene only - on the plane - Harry describing the "life of a single guy" thing}
Harry : You meet someone, you have the safe lunch, you decide to like each other enough to move on to dinner. You go dancing, you do the white man's overbite; go back to her place, you have sex, and the minute you finish, you know what goes through your mind?
"How long do I have to lie here and hold her before I can go home?"
"Is 30 seconds enough?"
Sally : That's what you're thinking? Is that true?
Harry : Sure. All men think that. How long do you like to be held afterwards? All night, right? That's the problem. Somewhere between 30 seconds and all night is your problem.

Well almost. That 1991 show (Atlanta) w/ Sonic Youth opening was the loudest thing I've ever heard. That's okay, all forgiven. I've still got some hearing...

When I was a young lad growing up in Middletown Connecticut, I couldn't stop playing the "Decade" album before having to leave for high school in the morning. I would crank up "Hurricane" until the house moved from the foundation (my parents were already at work). At about the same time in the mid 70's, I came across a feature article about e-richie in the local pnewspaper, the Middletown Press. After reading that article, I began to dream about e-richie building me a nice race bike, but delivering newspapers wasn't lucriative enough to pull it off. I'm 44 yrs. old now and I still don't have an e-richie frame because delivering newspapers still isn't lucriative enough. However, I still listen the Neil as it brings me back to those wonderful days as a junior racer dreaming about yellow jerseys and red bicycles. Fortunately, when the wife and kids are out, Neil still blows the house away.

I know this difficult without the ability to slap a few faces through your screens, but I was wondering if anyone saw the film, could tell me the song I refered to, and if he is giving tribute to Rick Danko.

Carry on, or rock on. I may have my answer in a few weeks.

Here's what's so great about Neil Young:

He works with his friends (Crazyhorse.) Buncha no names, and they effen rock...
He recognizes and works with 'new' artists (Pearl Jam, Sonic Youth) that his fan base might not 'get'. Because he knows what's good. (Sonic Youth and Crazyhorse - how cool was that?)
He wrote "Helpless" and he wrote "Rust Never Sleeps." The same guy!
He's cooler than Sinatra, but has been married to the same woman forever. And he loves, and is devoted to, his kids. Who really, really need good parents.
He does precisely what he wants, without regard to fashion or trend. Sometimes, he makes a "Trans" (***?) Sometimes he makes a "Freedom."
He's made great music for almost 40 years. One hander, imho, yo.

Was at the Move On concert in '04, the Boss and Fogerty trading licks, and then Stipes says, "Hey would it be ok if we invite a Canadian to join us? - y'know he can't vote here.") Young slinks out and they shift to Fortunate Son. My teenage son, truly fortunate, is trying to hold his jaw closed as he sees a living (sorta) legend start a feedback war. I swear I saw plaster falling from the roof of that stadium. Damage Done.

Saw Neil a number of times, all good, some crazy good (generally with crazy Horse) - including the Sonic Youth tour in Seattle. But perhaps my most enduring memory was learning to be a bad guitarist in my late teens and my best friend and I jamming for HOURS to Down by the River. The chorus gets a little tricky - I think there might have been as many as four chords there - but the verses (which you can play as long as you like when you're not messin' with words) were just two. Great way to learn to stretch out, mess with feedback, play lots of notes, play almost no notes and hold 'em for a loooong time. Just a lot of fun. When we got a little better, we moved on to Hurricane and Cortez (What a KILLER). Then Rust Never Sleeps came along and we suddently had a whole new repertoir.

Great music that any idiot can play passably well.

Saw Neil back in the early 80's playing an acoustic concert without Crazyhorse. It was Effin great. Just him on stage with a bunch of his guitars around him. ;) I would still like to see him in concert with Crazyhorse.

Neil is a treasure. He's tapped into some strange otherworldly force. He can hypnotize thousands with just an acoustic instrument or he can rock as hard as anybody. In the Last Waltz, he blows Clapton off the stage with the electric guitar and his version of Helpless with Joni singing harmony is amazing. Go see Neil live every chance you get, solo acoustic, with Ben Keith and Peggy, or with the Horse and old black. It is always special.

Heart of Gold is wonderful and you will never see Neil in a more melanchology mood. He was about to go in for surgery for an brain aneurism and he probably didn't know if he was going to make it off of the table. Fortunately for the world, he is still around.

I saw Neil a couple of years ago with Crosby, Stills & Nash. They were all pretty amazing, still able to harmonize like the good old days. But Neil, he just rocked the house! Knows his way around a guitar!

Someone should acknowledge your joke!

You know, I love Roxy Music - One of the few bands that got steadliy better from album to album (up through Siren, that is!)

But, for whatever reason, they couldn't cover another artist's song to save their lives. Have you ever listened to Ferry's These Foolish Things? There are few things worse than his cover of "A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall". What was he thinking?

Can't cover *any artist's* song???

C'mon, what about "Jealous Guy"? Much better than Lennon's original, IMO.

Won't argue about some of the others - was that a DISCO version of "I Put a Spell on You"? <shudder>

Been spinning Country Life a lot lately - (does listening on an iPod count as spinning?)

OK, I stand corrected. That version of "Jealous Guy" got me through some dark days after Lennon's murder. It's effen transcendent.

And here's something topical:

Neil Young unleashes a digital broadside today. His new album, "Living With War" (Reprise), was recorded and mostly written three to four weeks ago and as of Friday can be heard in its entirety free on his Web site, www.neilyoung.com.
