I don't see any reason why a 10 Speed Ultegra Triple Crank would not work with an otherwise 9 Speed drivetrain, with a 105 F. mech. Does anyone buy Shimano's claim that the "spacing differences" will impair shifting with a 105 9-Speed mech and chain?

Thinking with it being a triple, any compatibility issues may be exacerbated. Anyone run this setup?

This is probably true because Shimano triple front shifts are designed to be foolproof in the truest sense so when we move the lever as far as it will go in one move it will stop perfectly in the middle ring. My Campy 9 and ten speed shifters require me to move the lever until I feel it stop on the middle ring and maybe trim just a little. I have run 48-38-28 rings on both brands. On Campy the shifting was the same as when I had Campy triple cranks with 52-39-30 (I think) rings, essentially a clicking friction shift. On the Shimano the 48-38-28 rings required one extra trimming click that felt like the lever moved half as far the second time. It was no big deal but it was just a bit slower than shifts with the rings Shimano designed for the system.

I have no experience with 11 speed shifters.

i run Ultegra 6603 crank with 9 speed everything else. no prob.

Shimano is probably being very conservative by warning of "impaired" shifting. They didn't say it wouldn't work but they don't want people to expect it to be as slick as a fully matched system.

It will, just have to make sure the front der is either a 'deep' one for the 39t middle or a not so deep one for a 42t middle. The ultegra is 52/39/30, so use a 105, 10s front der and it'll be fine. 10s cuz it's 'deep'(long inner cage to get the chain from the 39 to the 52), not because it's 10s.

So if the original Crank is an FSA 30/42/52, we can safely assume that the FD is the "not so deep" one, and needs to be replaced by the "deep" 10sp iteration?

No because the deep one, inner cage will hit the middle ring when in the large ring unless it mounted way(too) high.
