View Full Version : Name my son

Since cycling is my first love, I thought I would consult the sage wisdom inhabiting this forum for some name ideas. My second child is due in July, and looks to be a boy. How about it?

All I have so far is:

Jerk (wife probably won't go for it)

Doof (can't rule it out)

anything ending with "-issimo" (current front runner)

While he is a baby, call him Cranky.

I have plenty of time to figure out what to call him when he grows up.

If you decide not to use Madison or Ben, and are willing to change names as he grows up, then I have them all:

Cranky while he is a baby.
Boss when he becomes a teenager.
Captain when he joins the Navy.
Eccentric when he is old and stays on the Serotta Forum 10 hous a day. :)

Never the Boss,

Ben

that's funny because truthfully Ben is my wife's favorite right now; and she is pretty much hatin on my bike habit/collection/obsession. She wouldn't know Ben Serotta from Shinola

That means there would be two bikes in the house with his name already on them, Hmmm...

Ben and Shino look nothing alike . . . for starters, Ben is in his 50s and Shino in his 20s. Sheesh!

Oh, maybe that's not what you meant.

Gotta handit to Sandy,
You've got it all mapped out for me, I know what to expect now. Oh, except for the Navy part. Hopefully he'll learn from his old man's mistakes and join the air force! That way he could get into a air natl. guard unit when he needs to and avoid the prospect of any real danger or hardship!

When we were looking for baby names, my husband started going through the UCI Pro-list. He was hoping a name on the UCI pro list combined with the fact that I raced when I was pregnant, but didn't know it, would help our baby become a pro cyclist. I highly doubt it works that way though.

anything but Sue.

Geeze, I dunno. We named my son Harry, a name I like, although we did it partly (very largely) in memory of my father, who was named--you guessed it-- Harry.

The real moral of the "boy named Sue" bit up top, is that it's never good to try to be too clever in naming your kid--I've never met anybody with an amusingly idiosyncratic name who really appreciated it. Also, you might do an internet search to find the very trendiest names so that you can avoid them--most kids place some value in fitting in, but most don't wish to be one of 6 Joshuas or 9 Ashleys in their third grade class of twenty kids.

See: http://www.ssa.gov/OACT/babynames/

We used it to avoid overly-popular names for both our daughters.

Also see: http://babynamewizard.com/namevoyager/lnv0105.html

for a funky little name explorer that shows changing popularity of names.

I recall former racer Franco Chioccioli (1991 Giro winner) promised to name his son after the winner of the Tour stage on the day the child was born. I don't recall who won (perhaps Cipo), but he said he was glad it wasn't D. Abdu!!!

We lucked onto the ssa.gov site before our girl was born. Lots of fun. That was great as we wanted to avoid the latest and trendiest. Kelsey was on our short list until we found that site...

Carbon

I like Steel. Steel is real. Good name for an athlete.

Or how about going Greek tragedy and you could try Scandium?

"Scandium, please take out the trash."
"Scandium, go clean your room."

"Steel, grab your racquet and we'll go hit a few balls."

"Carbon, if you cuss at your mom again we'll have to wash your mouth out with soap."

No wusses.
