Debating upgrading to 10 speed Record vs 8 speed. Current 8 speed Record RD is medium length. Will a "short" Record RD work with the compact crankset I currently use? currently running 13/28 hope to upgrade to 12/29 or 30

Also "Bonus" question, can the 8 speed shifters be rebuilt to 10?

Thanks as always!
Glenn

Short 10 speed cages are fine with compacts, though it depends on the largest rear cog for the chain wrap issue.

I don't think your 8 speed can be rebuilt to 10. 9 speed was just an indexing issue, but as I recall the internals aren't compatible between 8 and 9/10 speed generation levers. Sure The Tater will chime in though with the definitive word.

Negative on the shifter rebuild from 8 to 10* (It is *possible*, but requires replacing so many of the innards that it would be far more practical to buy the new shifters)...

What size are your chainwheels and what is the largest rear cog that you plan on using?

I run a short cage 10-speed Record RD with a compact Record crankset and a 13-29 cassette with no issues. That said, I try to avoid the big-big combo as much as possible.

I've done this numerous times as well with no problem just make sure the chain is the right length.

Think you mean 13-29 currently. Edit.....forgot 8 speed comes/came in 13-28.

Yes. Buying new shifters and selling the old is far more practical. I also had to slighly modify the body for clearance.

Use a normal short cage rear der for Campag 10s cogs, the 13-29 or 12-30.

Technically you can make a 8s ERGO 10s but need to machine the interior flats of a 10s disc to fit a 8s thru bolt.
