View Full Version : Attained Goal

With my ride this morning I recorded 6020 miles for the year and thereby surpassed my goal of 6000 miles. Not too shabby for someone who will turn 77 in 6 weeks time if I say so myself. BTW, my 12-year old Ottrott has over 82,500 miles.

That's awesome, for real. I know many 20 somethings that call themselves cyclists and maybe didn't even clear 500 miles this entire year.

Chief-pal, you go radio silence every year and then re-appear during Christmas to let us know that you are now a born-again Christian ...er...I mean, still alive and kickin some a$$!

Way to go!

It's really nice to hear from you. Hope you look me up the next time you visit Austin.

I'm assuming that you put all those miles on the Ottrott, and didn't get it used. I'm not sure which is more impressive, 6000 at 77 or averaging close to 7000/year for the preceding decade and a couple. Chapeau!

But it looks like you are slowing down as you have averaged more than 6,000 miles per year for 12 years.

Raise the goal to 7,000 next year. Age is mostly mental (I hope).

Very nice! I need to set a longer term goal such as that. I usually have trouble remaining motivated after reaching my shorter term cycling goals, I get lazy and take a few steps backwards, and my next goal is similar to one that was previously set.

LOL, I'm just the opposite: I don't have any short term goals! but I do set a seemingly arbitrary annual total mileage goal at the beginning of every year, and then come December I go into a panic/frenzy when I realize I'm several hundred miles behind

...or several thousand miles behind, like I am this year. :butt:

I'm struggling to crack 4K for the year. Mechanical issues, work, travel, dying Garmins, and the weather all seem to be conspiring to keep me from recording the last 130 miles that I need.

My best guess for miles ridden at riding 3 to 5 times a week at about 30 miles a ride plus some longer ones is 52 weeks x 4 times a week = 200 rides x 30 = 6000 Not bad for a rider 78 lots of hills in those miles
However my friend here in walnut creek CA at 76 has surpassed his 2013record of 175 times ascending to the junction on Mt Diablo by 25 that is about 30 miles a trip and 2500 feet of climbing or 200 x 2500 = 500,000 feet
I think I need a nap thinking about that figure

Chief,

Congrats on obtaining your goal, if only my goals were that lofty. I do have a couple questions, I get your Ottrott has 82,500 miles on the odometer.

How many components have you gone through?
What kind of maintenance is required for those kind of miles?

It is a testament to Serotta's designs, those are amazing miles for a lugged bike. That is one of the reasons I got an all Ti VaMoots. I was on the fence getting an Ottrott, but decided the longevity of the all Ti would pay more dividends down the road. I am NOT even close to 80K+ miles, so my worries were for NOT, I could of bought the Ottrott and been happy for years. I rode the Ottrott, the bike frame seemed to disappear underneath me. A very different ride from the VaMoots although the Moots is comfortable too.

Again congrats,

Satellite

P.S. Don you are amazing too!

I have a Dura Ace triple and have gone through untold number of chains and probably 4 or 5 cassettes, three 39t chain rings (since a 39t triple chain ring is no longer available, I just running a 39/53), and a bottom bracket. All in all I'm pretty satisfied with the performance. I try to keep the bike clean to reduce the maintenance effort. My biggest issue was cracking rear wheels which has been solved since I got a pair of Joe Young wheels over 64,000 miles ago. My goal is to reach 100k miles, but I'm uncertain who/which will give out first.
