Another gray and unpleasant day in the Northland, 25°, but little snow or salt on the roads. The mist and rain last weekend cleaned them off well. A little ice, but not much. And light wind.

Any road ride in December is a bonus here, even if there's ice in your beard afterwards and your bottle is still frozen 30 minutes after being back indoors.

Instead of my usual winter, snow and salt ride (Look KG361---early 2000's carbon), I figured I'd take a chance and go out with the #1 today. Hadn't been on it for well over a month, and given the conditions, I needed motivation.

Yep.

Sort of a night and day thing.

You're a brave man riding in that cold. Impressive.

Probably not the time to mention I had to break out the knickers for tomorrow's ride. It'll be 50 when I leave the house.

A true hard man.

And I suspect you'll have 3 more months to rub it in...

Meanwhile back in California in the city by the Bay..... Found me a shelter to take a break from the high winds of 5mph...

After being fortified with hot tea and energy bar I jumped back on the stead to brave the elements as headed for my destination, wind chill in the 60's.

I actually have come to love riding in the cold. On a tangent topic--I've had problems over the years with frozen bottles. Only solution I came up with was metallic insulated bottles with the screw on lid (Kleen Kanteen). And I put somewhat like warm water in. Squirt bottles (insulated) didn't work, either. Froze at the nozzle.

ok, @thwart, you either inspired me or shamed me into riding today since we're only 100 miles or so apart. I was going to go out yesterday but made excuses not to (heavy lifting at the gym in the morning without being fully recovered from the prev workout, didn't clean off the brake pads/rims after the last wet ride on my fender bike, etc, etc).

Read your post yesterday and almost replied then, but decided to ride today and then post. Also inspired by you, took out the Hampsten ti since the road had pretty much cleared off and I could ride w/out fenders. It was the perfect choice -- and I too needed the inspiration.

27F, light winds, a few flurries coming down -- gorgeous. Was out for 75 min before by toes told me I should be inside; I guess that was the road shoes/covers wimping out where I have winter SPD boots for the fender bike that handle longer time/or colder temps. Had hot water in my Camelbak Chill bottle, and it stayed liquid.

It's a treat to get out the road bike this time of year in WI!

Brave folks getting out in those conditions. Hats off for sure! I have to count my blessings living in Portland Oregon. Sure it rains and gets pretty darn windy but it's still really mild in comparison to other cities on a similar longitude.

Thwart-pal, if it would make you feel any better...I was actually thinking of you while I was out riding this morning. 60 miles. temp. upper 40s.

The reason I was thinking of you is ...I was trying to remember to come back to this thread and ask the question: er...which Peg did you end up keepin' in your stable? More importantly, does it like cold weather?

My ride today to offset bob's "winter" ride:
