Greetings everyone. So I have everything to build up another bike except a frame! I'd like to get something for less than a $100. What's a good brand to look for? Centurion? Peugeot? Raleigh? Some many out there.

EDIT: Sorry for vagueness. I'd like to get a vintage steel frame. See if I can't fit some Ultegra stuff I have. Frame will have DT shifters. 55cm - 56cm.

What kind of bike? Road? What kind of components? Modern group? Wheel spacing? Used? New? There are a lot of variables here!

Nashbar brand frames are right around $100. I've had a cross frame from them for ~7 years, it's been great. They do MTB and road too.

Cro-mo or alloy frames $100, and they have an extra 25% off everything today.

Louis-pal can tell you all about the the high quality ride of Nashbar frame. He rides it all the time and leaves his brand new Kirk, Colnago, Pegoretti, and other branded frames which I am not aware of, unbuilt and sitting in the basement.

To be pedantic, it's not a Nashbar frame, it's a Framé (or at least that's what it used to be called). :)

See, this is how nasty rumors get started. I do not have a Colnago. ;)

Jeez, the geometry for that frame looks like crap. Wonder if it's even accurate. Constant head tube length across all sizes?? 60mm BB drop (great for cross, I guess). 73.5* seat angle in 60cm size?

Pass.

Going to be tough to do that with a new frame that includes a fork and headset. Unless you've already got those bits. Used, doable, but I think you're scouring the usual suspects in that case (Craigslist, eBay, etc.)

I like that idea for a thread. "This is what I think ______ forum member looks like based on their name and posts".

When BBD came through Charlotte for NAHBS, I caught a rare photo of him on our ride together.

He spent most of the day off the front...

Save/bookmark a search in your local Craigslist for your size, with a price limit. Come back every few days, or once a week. Wait until you find something you like...

I don't know about $100, but I've seen good deals as low as $150-200 for some pretty nice steel frames.

I found a 93 Guerciotti lugged frame in great shape on CL a few months back for about 200...totally rocking bike...I would look used...

What's a good brand to look for? Centurion? Peugeot? Raleigh?

To this day I am grateful for the oft-repeated advice I kept encountering when I first started frequenting various internet cycling forum looking for a good value in a commuter bike, so I will happily share that same advice now:

Find a used Japanese lugged steel frame from the 1980s by Panasonic, Centurion, Nishiki, Bridgestone, or Fuji.

That exact sentence, practically verbatim, came up in nearly every thread on the topic I perused ~8-10 years ago. I wound up with an '86 Bridgestone and couldn't have been happier. Still ride it several times a week.

I agree with Bob Ross, used is the way to go. I bought a Centurion Semi-pro for my trainer for almost nothing. Really nice frame, I think I could be happy with it on the road

I'm willing to bet you can find a used inexpensive complete bike listed for around $400 and if it's been listed for awhile, they might take $300. when you consider wheels, group and all the small parts, its going to be a better deal than starting with a frame and fork for $100.

Is he just watching the bike while the owner runs in for a drink? By the cuffed ankle, we're to believe this guy is riding those Look pedals with those shoes?

This may constitute harassment under the forum user agreement!

But then again, is it harassment if it's true? :p ;)

This is also an idea. I see PDG paramounts all the time in this price range, that are nice riding bikes
