I have a set of BR-7700 brakes that are in absolutely marvelous condition except for the little plastic piece on the adjuster bolt assembly has broken (on both calipers, ugh), which of course makes the adjuster bolt non-functional.

http://www.euroasiaimports.com/productcart/pc/catalog/7700barreladjusterassembly_941_general.jpg

The Shimano part number for this assembly is Y-8FA 98070, but I haven't been able to find it available anywhere. The newer ones are of course available, but they don't look to be compatible at all.

Other than using in-line cable adjusters with these calipers, does anybody have a suggestion on keeping these wonderful brakes usable?

Have a bike shop call shimano NA direct to see if they have any. You are right, w/o that plastic thing, the barrel adjuster does not work.

Trying to get that part from Shimano is a waste of time. The answer to your quest is in your post. Euro-Asia has the part in your photo in stock but you have to order through a dealer that has an account and have a $100 minimum order. It just gets better and better.

You cant swap that for something else that fits in the barrel hole?? wont be 100 original but at least will work.

Squeeze caliper to get some cable slack, turn square nut to desired position. Instantly adjusted. Plastic piece keeps the center bolt from spinning, but there's more than one way to skin a cat... or spin an adjuster in this case. Of course if you are just trying to restore them to being original...if you can't get the exact part would a 6700 plastic piece fit? Looks similar by the picture, but I've got nothing here to compare dimensions with.

No, ultegra different part.

Btw-re EA, most dealers don't need $100 minimum order, at least Vecchio's never did.

Have you checked with shimano? They have had some pretty obscure and older parts in the past.

Maybe but this is what they say now:

Due to the costs involved with processing an online order, we are unable to accept orders with a total amount of less than $100.00 for wholesale purchases.

The 6700 part won't fit -- it's the same as on the 7900 calipers, which I have on my main road bike and it's obviously the wrong size when you have them side-by-side.

I found something on eBay that I'm going to try:

...and in the mean time, I'll call around to a few shops.

Yah, that's a good point... the plastic piece just prevents the bolt from spinning, thereby enabling one-handed adjustment. Using them as-is would certainly be not that much worse than adjusting cable tension on some of the Tektro calipers that essentially work exactly as a plastic-piece-less 7700 caliper would work (the main difference being no obviously-convenient place to grip the bolt).

If I can't find a suitable replacement part, I may just suck it up and use them this way.

I just called them. Dee, Dave or Anthony..even small orders. In the shop, actually quicker to use that old fashioned thing, the phone..rather than find website, log in, find part, select, check out..

1-818-248-1814..if you are a shop with an acct.

Or order $100 worth of stuff, it's a cool company and could use your support.
I just bought a couple of those adjusters and one of these:
