View Full Version : Caliper brake equiped (road) frame that can fit Jack Browns?

A question inspired by wooly's Hampsten in the gallery. Not necessarily a roadframe per se, but one requirement would be compatibility of road cranks. $600-2500 would be good.

Black Mountain Cycles Road (http://www.blackmtncycles.com/p/black-mountain-cycles-frames.html)would fit the bill, but may not be expensive enough.

Black MTN Road are nice. They say clearance for 33.3, the same as the JB, so I wonder if that's what Black Mountain meant?

BTW I'd be glad to stay at a lower price point, but the Felt F1 PR (32 clearance) is at the upper price range so I just went with that. :)

Sportif Classic has mad clearance:

PRs on wide rims so about 30mm there

Whoa that's pretty cool. Our boy Tophie has a CAAD10 and when he wears out his 23mm tires, I'll tell him to do this.

Intriguing set up on that CAAD beeatnik-- regret selling mine.

My bad on the BlackMTN Road tire clearance. Too bad I'm right in the middle of a two size jump. While I'm at is, what other tires are similar the JB in 32 to 33.3?

Grand Bois Cypres or Compass Stampede Pass are a notch above a JB, IMO. I've been running the Cypres for about 2 years primarily on road, but quite a bit off. Super durable for a light weight "supple" tire. I just purchased some Compass Barlow Pass (38mm) to try.

At $2500 on the upper end, a custom would be easily feasible.

On the low-end though, Surly, Soma and then sort of higher up on that range, Salsas.

With the advent of discs though, I love that all of this is becoming moot — run what you brung!

Takes 47-57mm reach brakes and with the steel fork takes a JB no problem.

Thanks. Do you know how they compare to Vittoria Pave for durability?

Felt F1 PR?

The one I'd like to but shouldn't buy.

If I wan't in injury recovery mode (still), I'd have my dream custom frame already. I'm *trying* to stay away from discs for now.

Surly pacer would work too but it's even lower end than the BMC.
I've had both and prefer the Black Mountain Road.
Between the stays at the tire is over 45mm where the tire is but if it doesn't fit... That won't help you.

Sorry no, I come from a Conti background. I don't get many flats in general, but I've only had two on the Cypres in ~2500 miles and I weigh 230. I'd say the thin sidewall is the most likely area if you off-road aggressive stuff. That said, I did a lot of heavy, sharp gravel on a recent 450 mile tour in Oregon and didn't flat once. My wife did on 28 GP 4-seasons.

Another vote for the Soma SanMarcos. Works wonderfully with the Compass Stampede Pass tires with Tektro 559s

Haha, likewise. Too much disc talk and exposure has me constantly thinking about them. They do work real nice on my MTB though.

I've had hit or miss (Avid) and that seem like the name of the game. My second set on an El Mariachi needs bleeding in the rear but no squeaking, howling or shrieking ever. We shall see...

I'll throw another bone to Black Mountain Cycles. Built mine last week, rode it this weekend and its pretty wonderful.

Definitely agree. Been riding a Black Mountain Cycles road the last two years and it is a great ride.

Not so much cheap but more workmanlike than anything else. Not off my list, but not near the top.
