Cool to watch, but I thought it ended up a bit sappy.
As I watched it I had my own alternate ending worked out:
The boys get to the line. The flag drops and Jackie Ickx blows Eddie away, leaving him in a cloud of smoke at the start line.
Eddie coughs a couple of times, waves his hand in front of his face, then shrugs his shoulders and quietly gets off his bike and walks away.
