Finally trying carbon, after 40 yrs of steel Colnagos and Merckxs.

Bought Texbikes C-50 frame, need recommendations for
- period correct saddle (2008 C-50)
- Going Campy record, but 10 or 11?
- Wheelset for allaround but do a fair amount of climbing, I ride old school Shamals, thinking of Cosmic Carbones with the alloy brake track, is Mavic with a Record group 'poor form'?

Cheers
Stephen

Will be listing a set of Campy Hyperon tubulars soon. That would fit great, especially for the climbs. ;););)

I only had it for a short while, but seriously regret selling. Imo aesthetically Shimano/Campy go well. Wheels--your choice. These are brand new Neutron Ultra, a solid workmanlike wheel.

It's here in Austin and in good hands. I get to see it on a regular basis and it's looking good - DA7800 build with a set of C24s on it.

I had it built with DA7700 which is what was in the garage when the bike arrived. The group was only going to be on there for a short time, but it worked so well that it ended up staying. I guess my point is pick the group that you really like and go with it. Also, I had an Arione on it. Definitely 2008 appropriate.

You're going to like the C50. I like my steel Merckx and Colnagos as well, but the C50 is a step up.

Perfect Arione will go back on thanks Tex! Been saving up for a good build....

If I were building a C50 (I wish...haven't been able to find the right one yet), I'd go with Record 11 and either handbuilt alloy clinchers (like CK or Record hubs to Hed rims) or carbon tubulars (Boras or all carbon Mavics, maybe).

But that's just me. I'm sure whatever you pick will be great, enjoy!

On the other hand, I bet 6800 or 9000 would look pretty cool...it's like the modern version of those Mapei C40s with Dura Ace.

saddle - san marco regal or fizik alliante

gruppo - period would be record 10 but what the hell- just do a record 11 and enjoy modernity.

wheels - since you climb - Shamal Mille. all black is mean!

I'm with him^

Very late record 10 (full carbon, black calipers, ultra torque) would be perfect, but if you can afford 11, I would be tempted.

As for wheels, I was going to say shamals or eurus. The shamal mille with mint record 10 and deda elsewhere would be my dream.

Campagnolo Hyperons will be ideal on a classic built.
Anyhow, it's going to be a great bike whatever wheels you use.

Enjoy it!

I would go Hyperons or Neutrons for the spoke pattern. I have and love Shamals, but something about a Colnago… but whatever you use will be awesome.

Maverick, that is incredible. Just went down about a 30minute internet loophole and found your weightweenies posting of that bike as well. Amazing! Do they still make the PR38 color scheme for any model more current than the C50?

@bingomck,

Unfortunately Colnago stopped producing the PR38.
The frameset is no longer with me though, sold it approx 3 years ago and went one size smaller, another C50 in monochrome (STSL) color scheme.

-I wouldn't muck with a period correct saddle only to find your bum isn't happy with it, spoiling the ride. You can't see it when yer butt is on it anyway.
-Record 11s
-Stay away from mavic, poor design rear hub. Either Campag/Fulcrum factories or step up, stop being a nancy, and build some Record hubs onto Ambrosio Nemesis, tubulari....

This is really helpful to me, thanks to all: so far>
-staying away from Mavic
-was thinking 50 or so deep wheels, now liking the Hyperon or Neutron, not man enough to go tubular though!
-most likely Record 11s unless I find a good 10s used...

The only thing that held me back from the Mille, was the 2 sets of Neutron's I already have. I'm a bit envious of your C-50.

I built up my C40 with Campy Zonda 2-Way fit wheels, Campy Record 10s and Campy Super Record Brakes. Love the combinatin and it rides great!

The Zonda 2 way wheel-set is outstanding IMO and the G3 lacing just looks too cool.
