Can anyone point me to a link for the 3M frame protection tape that you use? I picked some stuff up at my LBS that I dont really like. I think most people pick up a roll of 3m tape, but I cant seem to easily find anything to order online.

Thanks in advance and sorry for the request, I spent 15 minutes on a google search and didnt really find what i'm looking for and what I think people use...

I'd second the Leading Edge Tape. We use it on all sorts of things like race cars, motorcycles, and bikes. Strong stuff that doesn't damage the finish underneath.

Works very well, cut into appropriate shapes, and easy to use. Good customer service as well.

Look for this or similar on Amazon
http://www.amazon.com/ISC-Helicopter-OG-Surface-Tape-Outdoor/dp/B000O6BQMG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1417105236&sr=8-1&keywords=racer+edge+tape+clear

Can get 1" or 2" rolls.
Thin stuff is better for chainstays and tight places.
2" thick stuff is good for tube protection.

You can find the 3m tape in the autoparts too, if you need it right away.

I used this on my carbon frame - was able to cover the entire underside of the downtube, chainstays and fork and still had some left over. After measuring and cutting to the sizes and shapes I wanted, I found application fairly painless. Once it's on you can hardly tell it's there on my dark gray frame.

I am currently using clear Gorilla Tape on my down tune and chain stay of my road bike. Much cheaper and holds up more than adequately. I've bought the more expensive stuff in the past and this works just as well even if it is slightly less thick.

I had some Gorilla Tape damage paint after it had been on for a while. I also use the helicopter blade tape from Amazon (link above) and have been happy with it. It's a bit thicker and more protective than the stuff from Colorado or Excel, and is about a quarter the cost. I've also purchased Crankskins in the past and find they are useful for protecting the surface of crank arms from heel rub, but they aren't anywhere near as strong. They are die-cut to fit most crank arms and for the correct crank arm length, but with recent crank arms the profiles are pretty much rectangular so you can cut them from better materials yourself.

I'm curious about the damage to your paint, what did it consist of?

gorilla tape and 3m tape are different. gorilla tape is more like duct tape.

For example in a chromobelatto finish to put even scotch tape is not like a good idea because the paint will peel. The 3M tape doesnt have like glue to start with, is like the same stuff than the phone screen protectors, do it doesnt actually damage any paint if its removed. Dutch tape can easily take a chunk of paint of paint off a paint job.

Your local auto paint shop, detailer or clear bra installer will have tons of scraps that you can probably have for free. In general they will be using 3M XPEL film.
Bring a six pack for good will.
