Looking for a great 26" rear tire for my 69er Moots YBB for road and dirt/gravel road duty. Any suggestions?

If you want something fast, Schwable Kojaks are tough to beat. Marathons are good for something tougher with some tread.

I was impressed by the Fairweather tires that I saw at the Velo Orange booth at the Philly Bike Expo. They're made in Japan by Panaracer.

My wife has Soma Xpress tires (26x1.75) on her LHT. Terra with tan sidewalls look pretty nice. Oh, rides pretty nice as well.

I had Michelin Country Rock tires (26x1.75) which also rode pretty nice. Bit more tread and protection than Soma's, but a bit harsher ride.

On my Big Dummy, I am riding on Conti Town&Country in 26x1.9. Ok tire, but I'm looking to switch to Schwalbe Marathon Plus or Mondial for better flat protection. Changing a flat with cargo is not fun.

I rode these Panaracer RiBMo PT Tires across Canada on a 42 day tour not a single flat and the original front tire is still on the set of wheels I used during the summer for my city commuter.

Do you have any concerns about matching the performance of your front tire?

I'm currently running this bike with 26" front wheel on a 29er Salsa CroMoto rigid fork, so front and rear tires are up for an upgrade.

Do you have any concerns about matching the performance of your front tire?

I wondered what kind of tread is on your front wheel. Since tires are compromises on the continuum of knobby-good in loose stuff to slicks-good on smooth dry pavement I think one would not want to have much variation front to rear because you would always have "wrong" tread on one end or the other no matter what surface you were on.

I was always a fan of continental town and country tires for general all around riding. They arent great in the wet as they are pretty smooth centered but handle some dirt/ gravel fairly well.

I have Conty Town and Country 26x2.1 on my full suspension mtn. bike. They are quiet, smooth, and relatively low rolling resistance on pavement while providing decent traction in dry off-road conditions. They have never seen rain/water. :-). If you have never before swapped knobbies for smooth tires you will be amazed how smooth and fast your mtn. bike can be on pavement.
For a cheap experiment try store brand (Forte?) 26x1.25 or 26x1.5 tires from Performance Bike shops. List is $13-$18 but they are often on sale for $9 or so. The tread is so smooth they are not good on soft or wet dirt/sand.rocks.
