View Full Version : What is the white powder (?) on my new tires?

I mounted my new 700x25 Michelin Pro2 Race tires. Before I mounted the tires I noticed a white powder like substance on both the outside and inside of the tire, something that I have never seen in new tires. It looked like talc or a similar powder that one uses on the inside of the tire. If you wet and rubbed a spot that had the powder (?) it would disappear. What was this white substance?
In addition, the tread of the tires were not smooth, but somewhat coarse, like small little lines. For handling?
I would appreciate ansere to these two questions.

The white powder is added during the manufacturing process so the rubber will not stick to itself or the tire mold. I'm not sure if it's talc, but it serves the same purpose.

I didn't buy them in Colombia, but the tire reads "Made in Colombia". They were packed in coffee beans. :)

Correct, it is mould release agent. The stuff Ayrton Senna uniquely had buffed off his tires before qualifying :)

Sounds like stanazolol.
Sandy, drugs aren't the answer. Don't get caught like Ben Johnson did.

One thing for sure, no one will ever confuse me with Ben Johnson. I can't even run 100 meters. :)
