Do you mean "currently rideable" bikes, or do "frames waiting to be built up" count also?

CalfeeFly
03-22-2006, 02:48 PM
I have to show my wife the 10 bar. That will make my 5 look better. If she points to 3 I'll say I ride three of them the most. (One is on the trainer most times saving hassle and the other is the mt. bike.)

Define "bike". Are we only counting bikes that are ready to ride at a moments notice? How about bikes in various states of assembly/disassembly? What about a frame and boxes of spare parts that could concievably be put together?

Hello, My name is Mary Ann and I'm a recovering bike addict. Some of you may remember when I had 9 bikes in my stable. But I have seen the light! I now had a Kirk and a Fat Chance Yo Eddy. I no longer crave other bikes. I'm happy with what I have. I'm no longer confused by what to ride today. It's very simple- technical mtb trail I take the Yo, everything else I use the Kirk.

(I do have a couple of the older bikes still looking for a new home, a Bianchi Eros and a Bianchi folding bike, but I even got rid of my mint green schwinn cruiser bike..and I am still looking for a nice used bike in my size for use as a *gasp* commuter...but other than that I'm golden.)

I'm like Ginger--I have a road bike (custom Curtlo) and a mountain bike (GF Sugar 3). I think the more interesting question would be how many bikes of the same variety people have (i.e., do you have 10 road bikes, or 3 road, 2 mountain, a cross etc)

I can't seem to convince my wife that I "need" more. Personally, I don't desire more than one type of bike that is built for the exact same purpose, but in my ideal world I'd have:

1. A century/long distance bike that is stable/comfortable over the long haul
2. A quicker/racier bike for shortish rides (20-30 mils)
3. A touring/hrevet bike for loaded touring, gravel roads, fenders etc (this might be fit by two bikes, but I'm trying to be a little realistic)
4. A custom 29er (I long for an MTB that actually fits)
5. A "townie" in the style of dutch transportation bikes
6. Tandem for me and the wife.

That seems reasonable, doesn't it?

I won't include my wifes bikes but 8 at the moment for me:
Salsa cross bike
Cinelli supercorsa
Merlin aerial7 tri bike
Pinarello Surprise (used as a tribike)
Litespeed Vortex
Merlin mtn
Specialized S-works mtn
Specialized stumpjumper

I have a Cervelo R3 coming in a couple of weeks.

My ideal list:
Cervelo R3
Salsa cross
Sachs
Hampsten SBti with couplers
and the two merlins

Oh, and more time to ride.

I think the more interesting question would be how many bikes of the same variety people have (i.e., do you have 10 road bikes, or 3 road, 2 mountain, a cross etc)? For me, I have all go fast bikes -- but they do fall into different catagories. I have several (3 completes, 1 frame) that are older (80's) steel bikes that are ridden for fun rides. Then I have my modern race/road bikes that consist of 2 steel, 1 Ti, 1 carbon and 2 steel frames wating to be built. If I lived where there was better trails to ride, I'm sure there would be a cross and MTB in the stable as well.

Ginger -- I think I feel off the wagon...er, maybe I never got on :D

3. A touring/hrevet bike for loaded touring, gravel roads, fenders etc (this might be fit by two bikes, but I'm trying to be a little realistic) Mariposa currently under construction in Toronto
4. A custom 29er (I long for an MTB that actually fits) Old Univega rigid MTB
5. A "townie" in the style of dutch transportation bikes Probably filled by the soon to be Mariposa
6. Tandem for me and the wife. My wife doesn't ride

CAAD3 SS 63x?
Jamis Nova 62x59, 1x9sp, fenders & rack
Trek 750 (circa 1996) 58x?

Yeah, a Duende and a Time VXRS would round things out nicely, don't you think? :)

I do think you need another (log scale?) category beyond "10+" for dbrk :)

Raleigh Professional (1977)A friend of mine has a Raleigh built at the Specialist Bicycle Development Unit in Ilkeston out of Reynolds 753 and the best I can tell it is from '79 to '80. It has almost never been ridden and it sports a full Campy build, with Cinelli bars, stem & saddle, and Mavic tubulars. I need to get some pictures of this and post it in the gallery.

What's currently in my stable:

1974 Raleigh Professional (fixed gear)
1979 Colnago Mexico (vintage racer)
1981 Kevin Ko #4 (fourth of seven frames I built)
1982 Mercian Vincitore (commuter)
1992 Co-Motion Mocha (tandem)
1993 Serotta Colorado Legend CR (frameset only)
1999 Serotta Classique Ti (road races, crits)
2000 Russ Denny (Time Trial)

Regarding my 1981 #4. I built it specifically for me during my early racing days. It is now 2cm too large for me. Not that I've shrunk, just that now everyone is riding smaller frames than we used to back then.

Keith, I'd love to see pictures of that Raleigh.I'll try and get some for you soon. BTW, his paint scheme is exactly like yours, but with different colors. The base is black and the headtube and stripes on the downtube looks like the same blue as yours -- in person, it is sort of a sky blue with a hint of tourquose. Do you know what color they called this blue?

Current:

Serotta Nove - the new road bike
Seven Steel Axiom - the old road bike; to be sold, kept on the trainer or turned into a fixie. Seems too good for keeping on the trainer, though. And I could sell it and buy a complete fixie at a profit...
Klein Adept - the mountain bike
Fisher Tassajara - the pull-my-toddler-daughter-around-on-the-Piccolo, not-too-serious-'mountain' bike that I turned into a commuter and seldom use.

Ideal:

Serotta Nove
A Bianchi Pista or a Raleigh Rush Hour - the fixie. Would this work on a trainer?
A Santa Cruz Blur XC or a Specialized Stumpjumper FSR Expert - A new, longer-travel, nimble mountain bike
An IF Factory Lightweight or a Vanilla or a Richard Sachs - the next road bike
The front half of a Co-Motion Speedster Co-Pilot or a Santana Arriva Co-Pilot - maybe...

I am not sure how many I have nowadays. I've been selling off most of the production and modern bikes. I'll be keeping only the rarities, one-offs, and sentimental favorites. About 50 or so currently...My wife doesn't ask, doesn't care, thinks it's a good idea that I like something.

Bikes I still really lust from builders from whom I don't yet own one that are still available:
PJ Weigle (on order)
Vanilla
Spectrum 30th
Richard Moon
Toei

Bikes no longer made that I wish I had:
Flying Scot
Confente
3Rensho

I can also honestly say that there is nearly always room for another of the bikes from builders I've long had a relationship.

Love what you love, whether it's just one or a hundred...

EXPECTING

Sachs (2007?)

I had to tell my SO that I am done acquiring for a while. She wants me to sell some of the frames that I have had for a while, but have never built up. I told her I would, but I never seem to get around to it. The only bike I sold was my Serotta Concours that I loaned to a friend to do the 2005 California AIDS Life Cycle. She used the bike for six months and liked the bike so much that she refused to return it to me after the Ride and demanded that I sell it to her, which I did.

Debbie is great about my bikes. She has seen dbrk's beautiful bikes and has been to TDFL II and Giro de Bozeman, and, I think, understands how bicycles can be appreciated and, even, collected. She has a beautiful yellow Kirk with Camp Record that she loves, even if she doesn't ride it much. I wanted to bid on a beautiful red Sachs for her that was on ebay several months ago, but she demurred, stating that she would rather have a new couch. Her loss.

We are going to build a separate, secured storage area for some of them so that I don't take over the attic completely.

Needless to say, I'm a lucky guy.

Tom

P.S. I would like to see dbrk's and SPOKE's lists.

Thanks, Mary Ann,

I agree with you completely. She should have chosen the Sachs. We were going to have to get a couch, anyway. She could have had both.

Last year, you, Karin Kirk, and Amanda (Tailwinds) inspired Debbie. Hopefully, she will be joining us on her Kirk at Douglas' Ramble in August.

The number is getting smaller, and that is good. For the incremental enjoyment I get out of them compared to what I already have, any more frames are a waste of money.

OK, if there is a stats geek or perhaps better yet, a psychologist on here, can we get some help at analyzing this poll result at some point?

Here's my take; there seems to be a decent bell curve from 1 bike up to 5, then there's the huge group of folks with 6-7 kind of crammed up there, as if they are somehow clinging to the idea that they are SOOO different from the 10 or more group; as if that might make them certifiably insane, but owning 6 or 7? that's just fine.

Further evidenced by the paltry number who have 8-9, it's like whats the point stopping there? That seems to be the point of no return.

yeah, I have been watching the bell curve forming. With the exception of 5 it is pretty normal. I imaging with an increase in sample size that will come up to fit the curve. However, if 6 and 7 are segregated, it may already be inline. Really can't include 10+ catagory but it is nice to just lump the people with a serious addiction in their own since their reality is so different.

Two road bikes, steel and Ti
'cross bike, and it's an Hors Categorie
Fixed gear, steel

The wife has a Ti Serotta road bike and a Specialized fixed gear.

We have an incoming steel tandem, and the wife will likely get a 'cross bike for trail and snow riding and she wants a new fixie that is pretty, which means steel with lugs.

Spectrum Ti Randonneur
Pegoretti Fina Estampa
Co-Motion Co-Pilot S&S coupled steel
Trek Y-foil
Mid 70s chrome Fuji touring frame I might build up as either a fixie or a 650B

I basically haven't ridden any other bke since I got the Spectrum, so I have plans to sell the Y-Foil and the Peg.

1 Fat Chance Yo Eddy
1 Moots Rigormootis
1 Klein Adept

Hmmm... Time to thin the stable.
You've got a Klein Adept, and you're trying to decide whether to sell the Fat Chance or the Moots?!?! Dude! Sell the Adept! I would.

(Just so you don't think I'm dissing the Klein, remember I own an Adept.)

Naw, definitely sell the Moots. Especially if it is a 61 cm. I guess I could take it off your hands. I'm sure you would have many more years of enjoyment with the Klein. And it would aapreciate in value, as well, so you need to hold on to it as long as you can.

Yeah, break out 6 and 7 separately and you have a near perfect curve I'd bet. My own collection is in flux these days.

I only actually have four fully functional bicycles in my immediate possesion right now, but I've got three bare-nekkid frames hanging in the basement deciding what to do with 'em. I currently have my Spectrum road bike, the Rambouillet set up as a fixie (ENO hub), an old MB-2 set up as an errand runner, and a Brompton ready for the train or the trunk of the car. I have a fully built Poprad, but that's been residing 400 miles away at my brother's place and I think I'm gonna let him keep it - the best bike I can imagine if you're gonna own only one.

My Spectrum wrecked me for just about everything else I own in the road bike department. Don't seem to really enjoy riding anything else these days. The Riv sometimes, but I think I'm mostly holding on to some extremely fond memories there - its unbuilt currently. I bought an ENO hub and am trying to decide which of my nice steel bikes to keep as a fixie - either the Riv or the Rambouillet. Probably have to part with one of them, but it's gonna be HARD. My old Bianchi that I'd been using as a fixie isn't worth a bucket of spit, so I'll probably give it to a friend who's been meaning to try fixed riding. The old RB-1 also isn't worth enough to sell, but I dunno what else i'm gonna do with it.

Dilemnas.

Anyone else notice that the builders who responded (Sachs, Kellogg, Goodrich, Kirk, any others?) have fewer bikes than 95% of the others. When you know what works, you've achieved bicycle nirvana.

On the other hand, something tells me e-Richie has more than one bike.

It may be more than knowing what works.

What sense does it make to ask a guy who owns printing presses and the original mint plates how much cash he owns? He owns as much as he chooses to have, so after a while it becomes meaningless...

I've recently purged the garage of various bikes and related parts and am left w/the following that I can't seem to justify selling:

-1955 Raleigh Sports 3 speed in fantastic original condition. It was a measly $20 and is actually one of the more enjoyable bikes to ride in the fleet. It's the one that all of the neighbor kids want to ride.

-1983 Trek 660. 531c frameset in the process of a re-do.

-1983 Cinelli-built Centurion. Super Record components, all original paint, has a ton of miles on it but it still looks great. I've had it for 15 years and it was my first Italian steel bike. It's been all over the US and Europe. It lives in the house and doesn't collect too many miles these days.

-1986 Cinelli SC. About 98% Mavic SSC componentry. I smile when I ride it!

-1988 Romic "funny bike" track bike.

-1991 Pinarello Trevisio (NOS frameset) waiting on the completion of a NOS, period-correct Chorus groupset.

-1997 Serotta Atlanta (bought from Vaxn8r) w/full 9 speed DA. Solid bike.

Add a mountain bike along with my wife's 1985, Campy-equiped, Celeste Green Bianchi and it adds up to WAYYYY too many bikes. I'd like to say that I'm a minimalist, but........

How do you like the Moulton? That's a bike I dream of owning.

Very special design, mine is separable and good for storage.

The front suspension works very well and maintenance free.

But for the look, I prefer the original 17" wheel AM.

Got demo or second hand one, you can save a lot.
