Rode my single speedster on Friday for 53 miles in 29 degree F and today Sunday 55 miles in 34 degree F. I will ride through the winter as long as the temp is around freezing or warming.

Those bike racks look familiar... Piermont bike shop? I left home planning to head up there today, but decided I didn't dress well enough and just did laps in the park until my toes were sufficiently numb.

Road a bus a couple times on Friday. A train & taxi in Germany on Saturday. A taxi and a couple airplanes to get back to the states. I'm tired and ready to get a good nights sleep.....

What I rode was my new tubular carbon wheels on my new tubular 25s... first time riding tubulars on DRY road. It'd been raining for the previous two-three weeks.

I was still unable to really hit the corners hard, though.. where the road wasn't covered in a skin of frost, it was "sanded" with pea gravel. Just not great conditions for doing hard cornering at 45mph.

I lost about 200g of wheel/tire weight by going to tubulars. I don't know if it was placebo effect, or if it truly did make the difference, but I PR'd both sides of my closest bigger hill... Still second place, though. The KOM is still a freaken minute and a half ahead of me. I think I'll need to lose about 20lbs to make that up.

Did this ride (http://www.pezcyclingnews.com/travel/top-rides-the-tour-das-hugel/#.VGktcceJOuY) (Tour Das Hugel)...or at least half of it.
Wasn't planning to. Forecast said it will be cold (40) and wet (showers in AM). I went to bed telling myself...sleep in, you dummy, there will be another opportunity/year since I live in Austin and not planning to go anywhere anytime soon.
Wrong!
Woke up the next morning...she loves me...she loves me not...she loves me...she loves me not....
Even texted texbike last minute...suffering loves a companion
"I am not going" he said. After some cajoling...that changed to "maybe I will see you there". Well as it turned out, texbike had a little bit of a plumbing crisis at home which I didn't know until Sunday morning.

Anyway, I decided to show for the ride...but with a slower group, at a later start time (8 am instead of 7) doing a modified route (shorter and fewer hills) AND the promise that "when it stops being fun, we'll stop!"

Sounds good to me and so I went.
Ended up stopping after 32 miles and 3400 feet of climbing.

Why?
I am coming to the realization that in any epic ride, the goal is not to kill yourself but to know when to cut your losses or cash out when you are still winning.

I felt GREAT after we finished Lost Creek and came back to 360 which is the perfect spot to bail and ride back to the car. I proposed that we called it a day, the rest concurred and we can all go home satisfied and happy. :p:hello:

Pezcycling did a write up of the ride a while back:

Oh...what did I ride?
My trusty steel taylor of course...that weighs 22 Ibs (w/o bottles) equipped with a compact and a 11-34 at the back. Perfect setup for the day.
This is an "old" shot, taken when it was new and scrubby clean...it now bears many battle scars and dirty. :D

Oh and I forgot, I did bring this out for a short jaunt just a few hours ago with its new shoes (Resist Nomads 45mm tires), it was AWESOME!
This runs on 700cc wheels in case anyone is wondering.

Between a surprise plumbing issue and uncooperative weather, this is what I piled most of my miles on this weekend.

After a weekend filled with enchiladas, migas, pizza, beer and zero miles, I feel fat... :(

the regular crew was not around today, so two of us found some dirt!!! One guy was sick, another was going for long ride the next day, another had family, etc. anyway, it was pretty much dry and the trails were great! My rear wheel was making lots of noise, so I gotta get it on the truing stand.

yeah, 200 grams off the wheels should help with faster spin up and acceleration, the rest is up to you! if you're in shape, you should be able to stand on it and stay in a bigger gear and climb faster. if the climb is short, you may be able to keep the speed up for to the top. if the climb is more than two miles, start slow and kick it up when you think you can power all the way to the top.

I broke out the Castelli winter jacket and even used show covers on Sunday. Still didn't need the winter headgear but used the good ol'cotton cap.

My buddies wimped or went mtb biking, so I rode solo with my steel Sachs. I just put on new wheels (silver A23) and some old-new Vredsteins with tan sidewalls. These tires had been in storage for a decade; nevertheless they still were supple and smoothed out some roads that are in the process of being re-paved.

One thing about cold weather riding, I just feel slow with all those clothes (although I only wear a base and jacket). I think it's the tights that play on my mind.

Here's the Sachs - 15 yrs old and still good.

Maiden voyage on my caad 10
just a quick 15 mile loop in a northern NJ park.

Waiting on the wheel set that will be built and the tires are from a friends bike.
but my kids will be sad to see them go, they are their favorite part of the bike.

It looks fancy pulling away from you going uphill.

Or going downhill too for that matter.

Stop it, man. I've been riding that descent -- and crashing on it, including going uphill once -- for 27 years (I'll tell you that story next time we ride). I better be able to go down it quickly.

I awoke to an eye disorder--just couldn't see going to work today.

Cashed in a sick day and went for a nice 65 miler instead.

Unseasonably cold + snow + salty roads + clouds + wind = rollers.

Pete-pal, do you mind if I borrow your technical term "eye disorder" the next time we have a 70 degree sunny blue sky day here in Austin? Wished I had known last Monday when I ended up taking the day off. I was originally planning to work from home and seeing how nice the weather was and the cold front coming in the next few days, I succumbed to my weakness.

Haha yes indeed! Piermont bike shop it is.

It's getting too cold for comfort for outdoor riding...got to break out the indoor training regimen.
