I'm going down to that area in a couple of weeks. How are the roads in the park for riding? I'll be in Yucca Valley and was looking online at the park map, but I couldn't tell what I might be in for if I decide to go on a ride. I'd love to find a loop through the park that would give me 3~5,000 feet of climbing with around 60~75 miles.

I'd recommend a shuttle of some sort cause I don't think there is a convenient loop. Enter at Joshua Tree in the north and ride down to hwy 10.

I did two separate rides, one from each of those directions but never saw the middle. Of the parts that I rode, some of the roads were super smooth and some chip sealed. I think someone mentioned that maybe the middle part is not so good.

What kind of distance do you think it would be from the north entrance to the south and back?

this last image is looking down hill, 3+ miles into 29 palms _
this ramp outta town was a nice warm-up to the ranger station,
where the ramp continued, twisting upwards for another 5 miles. after
leveling off for 12 miles it then travels gently and then not so
gently up another 5+ to Keys View (5,185 ft.) it is this high desert
that has the plains of joshua trees and flinstone's rock formations,
rock climbers mecca.

pretty much my days consisted of a 6 mile jaunt into town, up
the park ramp and on into the park, usually an out + back ride.
several days of 4 hrs, coupl'a 5's, and a few in the beginning of
3 hrs..

it was extremely windy. cool, with lot's of afternoon sun _ temps
in the 50's and 60's. the first couple of days it snowed, enough to
close some of the roads. a tad warm for this new englander.

the road surface is a mix of fair macadem and chip type
surface. the shoulders come and go. the bike lane is only for the hill
up to the ranger check-in. and by the way, a $5 fee for 7 days for
a bicyle. there is VERY little water in the park with NO coffee and
hamenstushen stops. very little traffic at this time of year, tho' soon
picking up for the desert bloom.

lots of cyclists climb up into the park from Yucca Valley _ tri-geeks
training for ironman. a logical place to do so.

i road 40 -70 miles. the lanscape is SO surreal that an out + back
ride will seem like a loop. screw the shuttle _ ride a warm up to
the entry and then go. rte. 62 is ok (ok) to ride on, not great but
many do and there is quite a wide shoulder for those that care _
i don't.

from the north entrance, south to the cottonwood visitor center is 30 -35 miles.

i climbed in my 39/19 for miles. smooth, easy climbs.

if you go to palm springs and climb the tram-way road you will fall
in love with your 25. i only had a 23, and worked hard.

eddief heard correct _ the middle areas have the chip, and it ain't so good.
i rode clincher 23's puffed up to 105-110. don't whine, just ride in a big gear.

i took 275 pics. carried my elph on every ride. i stopped to smell the cactus.

When my son is stateside, he's stationed at 29 Palms. I really like the desert around that area and Joshua Tree, it's otherworldly.
