My knees have been bothering me after long high-grade climbs lately. I have a 39x28 on 130 BCD with a PM so no change up front. Can I put a 30t on the back? Shimano says no but does anyone have experience with something bigger? If so, what cassette - is it an MTB model?

So you are 11s, asking about a 9000 cogset..shimano makes 11s cogsets that go to 32 and 34, no 30t..but probably need this, compatible with 9000 shifters.

longer cage rear der...no 9000 model tho.

Thanks. How many teeth can the DA 9000 short cage actually handle in practice?

I'll bet it'll be able to handle a 30t..but no 30t 11s cogsets, AFAIK...Campagnolo makes a 12-29.

Aha! Take advantage of 11sp cross-compatibility. I love it. I think it's worth a try to see if that extra tooth helps my knees. If not, I'll need to move to a semi-compact or compact crank and that means selling my standard crank with Quarq PM.

Wait! I wasn't thinking clearly about the consequences. My CK R45 hubs would be so expensive to change to Campy that it plus the cost of the cassette doesn't seem worth it.

I suppose a SRAM WiFli 11-32 is too wide a range for the DA 9000 SS RD to handle.

Is there a hack I can do with individual sprockets that are Shimano or SRAM compatible?

I use a 12-30 with my short cage DA 7800 with the B-screw adjustment at the limit... I'd like a tiny bit more clearance but it is workable for the small number of times is use that cog...

Well, it would be even more expensive... but don't overlook the possibility that your pedals may be right on the edge of not having enough float. This turned out to be the balm for my knees...

Why not drop the 39t ring down to a 38? That should be the easiest most affordable option of any suggested so far. Your 130BCD power meter will handle that just fine.

Will that work with the FD? Shimano says 14t gap between big and small ring only. But it works in practice?

Hmm. Could be. I've been using Look pedals with grey cleats for years without trouble (at least not this kind of knee trouble) but just started doing a 12k climb at 7% average every weekend, so I figured it was the climb causing the problem. Everyone else I climb with rides a compact.

SRAM makes an 11-30.. Works fine. It's in my climbing wheelset

A 53-38 is fine. The gap on a 50-34 is 16t. :)

I run 32 tooth rear cassettes (Ultegra 11 speed) with 9000 all the time.
But that is with 52/36 or 50/34. Not sure if that makes a difference.
Just need to make sure you don't go full cross chain on the big ring.

Same as above but not all the time.. Briefly ran 11/32 with 9070 rd .. No issues. 32t was overkill.. Went to 30t

I run a DA 9000 crank with a 53-36 and the rear derailleur B screw ran out a bit. As long as you run a reasonable cadence it shifts great

sorry, forgot to ask what PM you were running up front

Works on compact, 16t difference..38 will be fine even if 1 tooth really means not much.

It's a Quarq with SRAM s900 cranks and Red rings.

Sounds like the RD can handle a pretty big range. Can one of you point me to an adequate 11sp cassette? Thanks.

Go with a 34 or 36-tooth chainring, opening yourself to the whole wide world of new gearing possibilities. They use the same bcd as your current rings.

6800 11-32

I must be completely out to lunch lately. I didn't even see this option when I searched. Thanks. I think this is handled now. I appreciate all the guidance.

As an additional data point I'm running a 105 11-32 cassette with a short cage Ultegra RD and 50-34 crankset. Shifting seems to work fine though it rubs a bit which I think I can adjust out. I have a 105 medium cage RD I may test if adjustments don't work.
