Finally out. Is this offering a real improvement in dirty conditions?

I was under the impression the issue was dirt in the cleat. Maybe the leaner pedal will help the cleat shed dirt and debris but I don't know.

I really wanted to like my Speedplays but every time I had to get off the bike to water the roadside corn they would fill with dirt. I could never get used to that.

From Speedplay:

Note: The Zero Pavé is not recommended for Cyclocross or Mountain Bike riding.

Does that imply they are a pain to clip in to? Or maybe they are concerned about someone being impaled on them?

Pretty sure it's because the cleat is not recessed.

It's not recessed for those off the bike moments. They've introduced a new one for that: http://www.cxmagazine.com/speedplay-syzr-mountain-bike-cleats-interbike-2014

I'll believe in Syzr when I can buy it.

that is the most incredibly complex cleat I have ever seen. And it looks like a death-robot

It looks like it's a combo of parts of a speedyplay Zero pedal + cleat in the cleat, miniaturised. That doesn't bug me. What is exciting / worrying is the marketing description:

…the representatives from Speedplay were hopeful that their pedals would allow riders with knee and other joint pains to enjoy retention systems for off-road use. They were also optimistic that the system could be effectively used for cyclocross.

That seems like not a good enough reason to try it? Although who knows, it may be the most comfortable pedal to ride on. Either way, that doesn't seem like the most hearty of recommendations.

It does, just a MTB variation of Zeros, where the rotation and such is in the cleat rather than the pedal. Adjustable float is nice, IMHO.

I think a lot of people already know the story behind this. They've been making this for years and a lot of pros used it at Paris-Roubaix, etc.. Consumers have been bugging them to put it out, so eventually they did. It's obviously not for everyone. Richard has been handing out prototypes in SD for a while for use on the Belgian Waffle Ride.
