Resolving not to dissolve into my couch like I did last winter, have my kettlebell and skis primed and ready, and rollers as well but I do not have a turbo trainer. Looking for a bit more directed workouts I was thinking I'd like to try some Sufferfest videos but will it work well to do them on rollers or should a trainer be considered essential?

I do them on 2.25 inch rollers. Great workout. 3 inch rollers didn't have quite enough resistance for me.

I have 3 inch rollers but do the sufferfest on the 1-up trainer due to resistance. Also while I can stand up on them not a quick transition.

Toying with the idea of the weight or wind unit, I think if you could get that than it would work fine.

I'm at ~200w at 35mph on mine...doesnt seem like you could do intervals very well without a riestance unit or small diameter rollers.

Rollers are fine but not rollers without a resistance unit. I do them on my inside ride rollers fine.

Been doing them for 3 years on a set of Cyclops rollers. They work fine, no complaints.

I dunno, 2 minutes on an indoor trainer/rollers is a suffer fest, or more like a boredom fest. Tried everything, loud metal music, favorite TV shows, hell even tried watching porn, and even have a few cold beeyahs while on a trainer. Just can't do it.

Since I got a set of Sportcrafters rollers with a progressive resistance drum, my trainer has been languishing in a corner. I have done a wide variety of intervals on my rollers, including 30 second HIT intervals (peak wattage in the 700- 800W range - a bit shy of a full sprint). I have done all the same interval sessions as I did on the trainer, but the rollers are also better for technique, core strength, and riding smoothly.

The question for me is - am I insane for thinking about doing FTP and/or MAP testing on the rollers?

The Cyclops rollers are the same unit. I have the resistance drum on the rearmost spot, and a high inertia drum in the centre spot. Take a look at the sportcrafter website for the high inertia drum.

The combination is amazing.

Sportcrafters w/resistance here too. These and the Sufferfest vids make hitting the pain cave more tolerable. Intense intervals are a challenge to keep upright while going cross eyed.

Dang you Anarchist -- had convinced myself I really don't need the inertia drum (had talked w the Sportscrafters folks and they said the resistance drum really wouldn't give me anything functionally over my current resistance unit) now you post this.... Now I have to check them out online again and may end up spending money I hadn't planned on.

I don't remember for sure but I think the high inertia drum was about $100 delivered to my door in Ontario.

I do it all the time on my "2.25 rollers. I only have one sufferfest - it's decending - you do a 2 minutes at thresh then 2 minutes off - then 1 minute 45 seconds and so forth.

Yea, man, doing staying centered when your HR is 180 aint easy - but certainly doable. The "2.25 rollers, to me, and I weigh 200, feel just a like a road with a ever so slight incline or head wind.

I simply can't ride a trainer - I like to ride a bike first and then exercise is a significant 2nd.

Dang it again. Bit the bullet; ordered both the high inertia drum and the resistance drum to replace the mag resistance unit I was using. Now the mag unit is listed in the classifieds in case anyone is looking to add resistance to their rollers.

And I'm thinking it's almost time to get on them given the weather here lately... but I'll put that off as long as possible and still keep riding outside jus to delay the insanity of TrainerRoad and Rollers:)

Yes, very challenging. I may miss the last 1% of the benefit with the need to keep upright, but I'm willing to give that up for the on-road feel and balance/handling gains. Oh, and I'm good through level 8/9 effort, it's just the 10 stuff where my eyes are crossed and tongue in the spokes that gets a bit "interesting."

It also may help that I built a platform ala E-Motion rollers that allows my Sportcrafters/CycleOps rollers to float underneath me when putting in really hard efforts.

I apologize for bringing this thread back from the dead but teleguy, I want to know more platform you built that allows your Sportcrafter rollers to float.

I just ordered the Sportcrafter rollers and would like to try to duplicate what you've done.

Any pics you could share teleuy?

I have a set of the Kreitler Dyno-Myte rollers which have the smallest diameter drums they offer. They're good for Z2-low Z4 type stuff but I hook up to the fluid trainer for any of the really hard sessions that I'll do. You can tune the resistance on rollers with tire pressure BTW.
